losing sound from time to time

Ok folks, new guy here looking for help.

Time Warner cable box
Pioneer Elite receiver (vsx-24 tx, it's about 9-10 years old)
Mitsubishi 73"
Sony Blu ray

I'm using digital cables for sound and video. Every once in awhile, and sometimes for more than an hour, I lose sound from my Receiver and the five speakers.
The only way to get sound at that time is through the crappy TV speaker. (Great picture, lousy sound) Anyway, the sound will disappear. Then suddenly, for no reason, boom, sound is back.

I tried switching cable boxes, that didn't seem to help.

I've get no sound when I play a blu ray during those times too.
This leads me to believe that my old receiver is the problem. Could there be a problem with the digital circuitry in the receiver?
Or does this sound like a "settings" problem?
I'm thankful and hundreds of dollars richer if the problem can be fixed without buying a new receiver.
Any ideas out there?

Re: losing sound from time to time

We don't have Time Warner boxes in UK or Europe.
(actually I believe Time Warner are the provider and they have various different companies making the boxes for them).
This is a Europe based forum.

Suggest you try at :
AVS Forum
which is North American.
It also sounds like you should be complaining to your cable provider.
