Tiscali+ fan

Is the fan meant to be running all the time including when it's on standby? The noise isn't too bad but it does get annoying.

Re: Tiscali+ fan

I can confirm that the fan does run at all times including when the box is in standby. I understand that future updates may help with this. I have gotten used to mine!

Re: Tiscali+ fan

Thanks for the confirmation. I've already stuck rubber feets to the bottom of the box and there isn't much vibration noise from the HDD - just the humming of the fan which really doesn't need to be running in standby.

Also I read on DS the HDD is 160GB but we only get 50 hours for recording, shouldn't we get more since Tiscali broadcast their video in MPEG4? I hope this reserved space is for future HD development.

Re: Tiscali+ fan

Do any of the MKs know when this update is due to fix the fan? There's no need for it to run when on standby and it is quite loud in comparison to a Sky+ fan.

Re: Tiscali+ fan

The fan is running all the time.
Its amazing just what we will put up with (the noise, added expense, etc.,) how often are we told "Don't leave it on standby, Save the planet"
Things will not get better if we do not COMPLAIN and if you don't get satisfaction COMPLAIN again, --- but always do it politely for maximum effect.

Re: Tiscali+ fan

Software updates were released, and should now be functioning, if you are still experiencing issues it may be wise to contact TV support - best if you wait for the latest update however (due very soon) which should clear up users affected,

Thanks

Chris

Re: Tiscali+ fan

Hi Chris,

I've just taken delivery of a Tiscali+ box and was very disappointed to find that the fan runs constantly, even in standby, and is noisy enough to drive you to distraction when you're in the room without the TV on.

I suppose it's possible that my 'new' box has actually been sat on a shelf for the last few months and has thus missed a software update that should have addressed the problem? Or am I simply expecting too much?

Is there any way to check what software/firmware is on the box?

Tim.

Re: Tiscali+ fan

Hi, the fan "issue" was not resolved with the latest software download. I don't think Tiscali see it as a problem - I have it switched off most of the time now as I'm using Virgin's V+ box more and incidentally it has the same drive in it and runs well without a fan.

Re: Tiscali+ fan

Thanks for the info. It's a shame they don't consider it an issue, it's exactly the kind of thing you'd think they'd be trying to avoid when tying people to a specific box. Otherwise I'm very impressed with the box and the service as a whole.

Maybe if the wire for the slow fan speed mysteriously broke then the box would be perfect. If it got too hot then the fan would still kick in on high speed at some point, but the majority of the time it would be idle. ;-)
