Should I seriously NOT consider Tiscali ?!

Hello Folks

I am with BT BB (with BT Vision ) and am thinking of moving to Sky BB and get multiroom (Saves £10pm). Tiscali seem to have a good deal which also saves on the line rental. But from what I've read about CS and slow speeds and all the pther gripe, its a no no. I would like some advise as to whether I go to Sky or seriously consider Tiscali ?! PS my BB speed is 1.6Mbps.
Thanks

Tiscali does get a bad rep and probably justified sometimes, however, there are some happy customers out there, me included. I had a similar decision to you earlier this year and chose Tiscali, so far so good

Re: Should I seriously NOT consider Tiscali ?!

I've been with them for 4 years now. In general the service is good and reliable, but occasionally (probably 3 times in last 4 years) they c0ck something up then it takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to get sorted, which can be VERY frustrating.

Like when nobodys emails were being sent or received for about 10 days last year and it took them about 3 or 4 days to first own up to the problem!

But good price and I'm still with them so can't be that bad!

Re: Should I seriously NOT consider Tiscali ?!

Thanks. I also want the full package with TV.
And with a slow internet speed - I also hear that with TV and BB, the slow speed will be a problem. Any other views out there ?

Re: Should I seriously NOT consider Tiscali ?!

tbh bud if you can get sky , get it as tiscali is really only good for those of us that cant receive sky of cable, here are a few reasons to avoid tiscali

Poor picture quality

No HD

Crappy customer service

No HD

compatibility issues with router (will not connect to my iphone)

Me personally I spent 4 months with no service during a switch from homechoice and tiscali could not give a toss, infact the answer they gave me was (well your not paying for it) which does not help when you are without tv or broadband, please keep in mind they told me that I would not notice the switch as it would happen over night ....it did not

be careful bud when choosing

on the plus side the ondemand is fantastic and when the service is running its not bad but the picture quality is really bad.

good luck bud

Re: Should I seriously NOT consider Tiscali ?!

I contracted in Dec 07 for Tiscali service covering free phone calls (including many other countries), tv, broadband and bt line rental. £25 pm. I still receive BT bills. I have written - and received meaningless replies - 15 times. The last time - 8 weeks ago - I suggested they passed my letter complaining of breach of contract to their lawyers. I've heard nothing since. I could go to Cisas but last time I did that in respect of Tiscali, Cisas said that Tiscali admitted their fault (not the current one) and would correct it. They didn't. Tiscali is by far the worst company I have ever dealt with. It is a pity that there is no way that they can be put out of business.

I am sorry to hear you have recieved such poor service. Do you have any ticket or reference numbers relating to your conversations with us? If so, could you PM them to me so I can find out what is going on for you?

Re: Should I seriously NOT consider Tiscali ?!

We do not actively block anything. Traffic is prioritised at busy times in favour of common tasks such as browsing and sending/recieving email over high bandwidth activity such as large p2p downloads.

I wish somebody would tell my brother that - his DVD collection is nearly squeezing me out of my own home

Re picture quality - I have no complaint about PQ from the channels that bother to transmit decent quality. Sometimes it's extremely good and compares well with my Freeview PVRs.

Re: Should I seriously NOT consider Tiscali ?!

I have been with tiscali for the past year because I can't get virgin, the communal sky dish is really dodgy and I want more channels than freeview. The package including telephone and broadband is also great value. The on-demand channels are great.

However...Seriously, I would not consider Tiscali unless you have no other choice.

The service is the worst I have ever experienced. The box frequently freezes i.e. several times a week or simply won't switch on from standby. Tonight alone it has frozen three times, requiring the power to be disconnected, and I have had two very helpful error messages come up ("Stack overflow" and "unrecognised op code"...) before being asked to reset the box a futher two times. I have tiscali plus but these errors mean a lot of programmes don't get recorded. Often the box will claim a "power failure" was to blame.

Tiscali cutomer services are even worse than NTL used to be and that really is saying something. One weekend I had virtually no service at all and had to call them nine times over two days; every time I called I was talked through the same process of resetting the box, before eventually an engineer was sent.

Add to this the fact the box takes several minutes to actually start up, even from standby, and there are no digital teletext/interactive services and not even any subtitles (this I really can't understand).

I'm moving next year but will make sure I can get Sky TV...

Wouldnt touch them at the moment, as they have talks with every man and his dog about selling, Sky are currently in talks with them.

Re: Should I seriously NOT consider Tiscali ?!

Got to disagree with most of the comments here, sorry.

I got Tiscali tv 3 - 4 months ago and find it excellent, from the customer service in the first place, to the lad coming out and setting it up right through to the excellent picture quality.

Never had a problem, a drop out, picture freezing or anything and am amazed at the comments above - looks like I must have the only working box

No, I totally agree with you. i love tiscali TV. never had a problem and would like to keep the service forever.

But having heard todays news im not optimistic. Tiscali cant sell and they have suspended share trading and are trying to negotiate the interest payments on their debts. I would be very surprised now if we still have the TV service in 6 months time.
