Both pairs used to be required for old fashioned phones in order to ring the bell.
A single pair should be fine with all modern phones.
Use Google.Wikipedia or AVforums search (searching all forums) for more info; it's been discussed in the past but I forget in which section.

Could I remind the posters above in particular the prominent member that this is a Cable TV forum not a discussion place for cabling/wiring/connectivity. The place for this is

Interconnects, Speaker Cables and Switches - AVForums.com

Although I do think the word speaker should be removed from the title!!

You are up late or very early Sunday Chris!

Nah - it's only 7.50 PM here; Boston is EST, 5 hours behind UK.

Apologies was getting late here and after perhaps a little too much californian wine - added the time diff rather than subtracted - should have known better as travelled several time to US in the nineties. However trust you agree - wrong forum?

Agreed - and answered further via PM.
Trouble is that people see the word "cable" in this section title first if they work from the top.
Could change to CATV but not everyone is conversant with that acronym.

Fully agree (the little plate in the road outside my house says CATV on it!)
Perhaps "TV supplied by Cable Services" would be a better title for the forum?

Also as I said I think the word "speaker" in the other forum title suggests that it is not for Scart/HDMI/DVI/VGA/Component/RGB/S-Video/composite interconnect problems.

I trust mods are monitoring this dialogue?

PS no PM received?
