Tiscali TV Feedback

Hi guys,

I am hoping to move into my first place over the next few weeks so would appreciate peoples thoughts and advice on their Tiscali service.
After comparing the prices of the various different services, sky, virgn, bt vision etc, Tiscali appears to be the best value package.
I am particularly impressed by the inclusion of what I would consider as 'premium' channels such as Sky One, Scifi channel, FX channel and HBO on-demand (with the xtra mix).

So here are a few questions that are on my mind:
How reliable is the Tiscali+ recorder?
How reliable/whats the quality like of the channels delivered via broadband?
How reliable is the broadband service?

Your valuable assistance would be much appreciated

Thankyou

GT

I can only speak for myself but the service has been fantastic.

The VOD and the broadband channels have great picture quality, even on a 42 inch LCD. The box upscales very well by HDMI too.

The broadband obviously depends on your line but I have never had an outage in the last year and the speed has been constant 7meg or more.

I have also downloaded a LOT of stuff, sometimes 10gig per day and have never had my use capped ir had any fair use breach.

It is the best value TV service around. There are some channels missing that you would get on sky but you get most of the main ones like GOLD, sky 1, discovery etc. The VOD is second to none.

I can't recommend it enough.

I haven't had the tiscali+ recorder but by all accounts it is a very nice peice of kit and there are whispers that it will soon be used for a sky anytime type HD service that records HD programmes to your box overnight.

Re: Tiscali TV Feedback

The only negative thing about tiscali in my view is the £99 installation fee. It isn't even as if they have to fit a dish like sky do. They just come round and plug your box into the phoneline.

And as I was discussing on another thread, you "buy" the tiscali + box for £50 but it will only work with a tiscali subscription.

Re: Tiscali TV Feedback

Thanks for all the feedback guys, its looking very likely I will be going with them.
Could someone clear something up for me. One of the things that makes Tiscali so affordable is the fact that it includes the BT line rental in the monthly costs. How does that work exactly?
So if for example I move into a new apartment with telephone points already installed, I presume I just ring BT to have the line connected and THEN call Tiscali to have their services installed and they will deal with the line rental?

TIA

BT will try and get you into a 12 month contract with them but I don't think they are allowed. Ask tiscali if they can activate the line. I beleive you can pay the post office to activate the line as they dont have a minimum contract on their phone service.

After looking into this further online it seems other people moving into new builds are having similar problems. They are either charged £125 connection fee and/or tied into a 12 month line rental package with BT. Having to pay BT line rental on top of the Tiscali package does rather make this option less attractive.
However, before I make any final decisions I will have to phone Tiscali and see if they are able to activate the line, I'd rather not have to go down the road of signing up with the Post Office and then cancel it after they activate the line.

I would really appreciate any help from people who have signed up to Tiscali after moving into a new build.

Cheers

I phoned BT to activate my phone line and they said the only way they could was to start a 12 month contract.
So we phoned the Post Office who activated it fro free. Although they did say if there were any problems it would cost £105.

Re: Tiscali TV Feedback

Not yet, although we envisage no problems.
Someone from Tiscali unofficially advised us to go down this route.

Re: Tiscali TV Feedback

Part of me wishes I had done this.

In the end I opted for sky in the new house because I didn't want the hassle and sky installed everything for free.

I am getting a great service from sky but I miss the VOD on tiscali.

Does anyone know what happens if you have everything with sky (line rental, calls, broadband) and then switch to the triple play package from tiscali?

I might do that when my 12 months is up with sky, but I will want to make sure tiscali has a future and they won't charge me a huge fee for migrating to them
