bt totalbroadband

hi ,i,ve had bt totalbroadband since last thursday,to start with i was getting speeds of around 1mb,this climbed up to a peak of just under 4mb over the next few days,today i,m only getting 256!is this normal behaviour??any advice would be greatly recieved!

Yes this is normal in the first 10 days its to setup a profile of what your most stable connection is.

thanks for reply mate ,now i,m getting speeds as low as 169 kbs !if i unplug the hub ,leave it for five minutes it goes up to 2.7 mbs ! any ideas ?

thanks for reply ,is this 10 day line testing all because of the hub ?i previously had aol broadband and none of these problems!,the guy on the online help desk said i had to wait up to 20 days!!!for a stable line,i pointed out that that takes me beyond the cancellation period and dont want to be left with an unstable slow product( to witch i got no reply !)

If you on ADSL MAX, then the 10 day line testing period is standard and everyone has to go throughit. If after 10 days your line doesn't stablise, raise a fault with BT.

The 10 day period, is actually there for BT to get a maximum stable rate (MSR), so that they can then tell the service provider, what the fault threshold level is, that is, at what speed they will accept a fault on the line.

If your line is fluctuating that much...I propose that you have either a fault on the line or an internal wiring anomaly, which the BB doesn't like.

Try connecting to the main socket, with no other WIRING connected...hopefully you have an NTE5 style socket..if so...undo the two screws and remove the lower portion...which should disconnect any internal wring, then plug your filter and phone, router etc into that..and see what happens.

It will take a day or so for the lien to stabilise after that.

Most problems on MAX circuits are caused by internal wiring or incorrect filtering problems...and an Alarm connection, commonly (illegally) connected to the screw terminals on the rear of the NTE5 is really bad news.

message to skeet! thanks for your advice mate,took the bottom panel off the socket and my speed jumped up from 1100kbs to 2.5mb immiediately,my next question is can i leave it like this ? any advice greatly recieved

Yup...if you want to you can, remember if you put it back, speed will drop again...what you need to do now, is cycle your router twice a day for about 4-5 days. That is, just switch it off then on again, twice a day.
I usually say, when you get up, then again at around 6pm but whatever works for you.

This encourages the system to look at you line and adjust accordingly (to increase stable speed).
