Use BT Internet's SMTP Server for non BT Email Address

Greetings gurus...

A friend of mine has her own domain and wants to be able to send email using her BT Internet connection at home.

She had it hosted many moons ago and although it's meant to have it's own SMTP (both the incoming and outgoing are mail.herdomain.com), it appears that now isn't the case.

So...she has BT BB at home and is happily using her @btinternet.com address, but would like to add her own email to Outlook, but it will need to use BT Internet's SMTP.

So my question is, can this be done or do we need to find a new email host?

I'm hoping it can be done using her current set up as doing anything for her can be, shall we say painful at the best of times...

Cheers.

I would say the first call should be to the hosting company to find out what has happened to the mail option.
If the hosting company have discontinued email support then you are kinda sunk as you would still need incoming mail support at mail.herdomain.com to receive mail. You cannot configure the BT servers to accept mail from a non-BT account. They can be used to send mail for a non-BT account using an authenticated BT account.

She should be able to set her custom email address to forward all incoming emails to the BT email address, this is usually free and done via the website of the company she registered/hosts the domain name with.

Once that is done she must give BT broadband support a call and ask them to add her custom email address to her account/relay allowed list. After that she will be able to use the BT SMTP server to send emails using her custom email address.

I have done this several times for customers using BT Business Broadband, fingers crossed they allow it for non-business customers too.

An all together better solution would be to sign her up for a FREE Google Apps account - it's the Bees Knees!

I would agree with you there as it was the first thing I thought of but then remembering the OP's final comment I thought I would save that until all the BT connected options had been exhausted.
