Sky to BT broadband

So I have 2 options, each has a question.

1/ Have BT install a new line, then broad band and then cancel Sky once BT is all up and running.
How long does it take to get the BB up and running once the phone line is in ?

2/ Transfer the Sky line over to BT.
Very similar, if I transfer over, how long does the BB take to activate ?

What I did with mine is transfer everything across in one day.

I ordered on a Friday 13th April I think it was, they were scheduled to do the outside work on the 19th, with the actual install due on the 30th.

Just to give you an idea how long things take. There was a delay on the outside part so I was waiting a while for that, but the phone was switched over on the 30th as scheduled.

I have read of people switching everything across and being told phone and broadband can't be done on the same day, do broadband has been delayed. On the other hand some people say its all been switched the same day it was planned to, so it basically seems like pot luck. Which isn't really much help!

1. Installing a new line will cost you the install price which is about £120.

2. Go to Sky say you are moving your BB and need the MAC code. They should give you it. You then contact BT and order BB and give them the MAC code. Thats the deal in its simplest form. The thing I cannot take into account is what you are moving to with BT. e.g. Infinity would need more work to install. If unsure about times contact BT and ask them what would happen if.......

BT provide a new line for free if you order BB and phone at the same time.

Infinity is not quite ready yet, the cabinets are still been worked on. I have been quite OK with Sky and I am still tempted to wait it out for a bit longer until Infinity is ready and then go with Sky.

Although I do need to speak to them, they did some work on my line recently and my BB speed has dropped by about 1/3 and downloads have dropped form 800k to around 500k.

With the new BT line it would at least provide a newly commissioned line, the cables up to the house are only about 2 years old.
