Comic Book Protective Wallets

Hi all, I have quite a few comic books here which are just in boxes and I thought I would try and get some plastic wallets like you get when you buy new. I can't seem to find any though, anyone got any links to bulk buys, eBay or the like?

Or anything similar which would protect them?

Re: Comic Book Protective Wallets

CURRENT Size Comic Plastic Sleeves bags w/ flap x 100 - eBay (item 390007611263 end time Dec-10-08 09:51:58 PST)

Obviously depends on the size of your comics though.
(shipping is a lot on that cause it's from america, but was only a quick google for comic plastic sleeves)

Edit: also found: Mega City Comics who sell "Collectorline® bags" which are available at a lot of places when you google them

Re: Comic Book Protective Wallets

I thought plastic was bad for comics, Thick paper or card would be better I think.

Depends what conditions you're storing them in AFAIK.
plastic wallets like that can let moisture in and cause it's plastic will hold it, so if you're in a damp place then yes, that's worse for them, but if it's in a cool dry place then they're perfect.

Re: Comic Book Protective Wallets

Around fifteen years ago I think that Mylar bags were considered to be the best but I'm not sure if that's changed now. Also make sure you leave a gap for air to get in and out of the bag as making the bag air tight is bad for the comics but I can't remember why.

EDIT: Also if you're buying backing boards as well make sure that they are made from food grade cardboard as normal cardboard can have an adverse affect but again I can't remember why.

Yeah a mylar bag with a piece of card at the back to give it some support is how they do it in most stores, they also say to change them every 5 or so years, moisture is often a problem, so the comic should be checked every now and then to make sure the colours are not running or bleeding onto the backing board etc.
I'm sure there will be a few sites about comic book storage on the internet as there are plenty of communities for them.

Edit: sneaky edit there Wib , but yeah backer boards can also be specially bought, you need acid free/alkali buffered boards ideally, to do with bleeding etc I think.

I always seem to remember a bit of important information just after hitting the submit button. As I bagged up most of my comics around fifteen years ago I should probably check them to see what condition they're in

I'm the same, I edit straight after posting a lot of the time, I sold nearly all of my comics a while back sadly, oh to turn back time!

What comics were they? I have a small collection of Beano comics from the 40's - 70's

Mostly some older DC ones nothing overly rare that I remember, also had a couple of Beanos and Dandys, would be nice to have kept them, but thankfully I don't think i've lost out too much on them!

Re: Comic Book Protective Wallets

OK, I might go scour google a bit before I sort anything out, didn't know there was so much to think about!

There are loads of DC ones from early 90's and bits and bobs, doubt they are worth anything more than 99p on eBay, but always nice to keep stuff in as best condition you can!

Speaking of which, are there any reliable sites out there which tell you what they may be worth - obviously not every comic but the main ones which would be rarer etc...

ComicsPriceGuide.com - Online Comic Price Guide is a pretty big site for it all.

As for storage check this out: How to Store Comic Books - wikiHow

Edit: Or you can check out "Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide" - annual publication of prices I believe.

Yeah there have been some old first issues and specials go for thousands of pounds, it's madness, I wonder if the prices are affected in the recession...

Though i'd imagine most hardcore collectors would rather sell their house before their comics.
