Finished the Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.
Now onto a Thousand Splendid Suns by the same guy.
Really touching, emotional books. I didn't think I'd be into that kinda stuff

"I hope they serve beer in hell" by Tucker Max. A collection of boozed up anecdotes of him being an arrogant git and getting loads of ladies.

But laugh out loud funny in many places.

Re: What book are you reading at the moment

Got through a few books lately:

Pair of Silver Wings - James Holland: Great WWII "drama" novel, really captures the spirit of being a fighter pilot in Malta (educational as much as entertaining)

A Tale Etched In Blood And Hard Black Pencil - Christopher Brookmyre. Not a bad read (though you need to read much of the dialogue phonetically with a Scottish voice in your head!), but certainly not one of his best. I fear his best works were the early ones!

Live Bait - PJ Tracey. Not a bad serial killer thriller, except I guessed the outcome way before the end and thought the police were a bit stupid in it.

Sharpe's Fortress - Bernard Cornwell. Reading this now, and it's a great read (as always from Cornwell). I bought every single Sharpe book in the sales over Xmas, so working my way through them in chronological order. Read the first two a few years ago so just picking up again now. I find the Sharpe books to be good easy reads to lose yourself in, only started this one on Friday and should finish it in the next couple of days.

Upcoming reading is Sharpe's Trafalgar, then probably a change of pace - either Harlen Coben's first book (got 11 of his to read!), Ian Rankin's first Rebus book (got 11 of those to read too!), or the first in Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Not sure I'm ready for The Dark Tower yet, it's a long series and I'm enjoying changing genres after each book, so I might give Duma Key a go, which has got to be better than Lisey's Story (the first King book I've ever given up on).

Thinking about it, Carl Hiassen is calling again as something dark and funny could be just the ticket, or Scott Lynch's The Lies of Lock Lamora (been holding off starting this series though as he's not finished the 3rd one and it's on its third publishing delay!!)

Anyone else have too many books and not enough time? I love reading with a passion, but my OCD seems to have extended from movies to books - last count I had 150 to read

Me neither, but these are two of the best novels I've read in a long time. For some reason Kite Runner had me blubbing - "For you, a thousand times over" - one of the best lines in any book. And Thousand Splendid Suns was an equally - if somewhat harsher - read with a real lump-in-the-throat ending. He's a seriously good writer.

Yeah, it didn't have the same feelings in it, it was too rushed I felt.

I do have 12 (or so seemingly) in the to-read pile (brownie point for anyone who guesses how many advertised as Richard & Judy when I was in Waterstone's )... but picked up The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Audacity of Hope two days ago
Is The Kite Runner any good?

Edit. Just seen above.

Re: What book are you reading at the moment

My God. Had to look back over this thread to see how long it took me to finish The Kite Runner.

Great first part of the book. Second part when the setting changes is when it gets boring. By the time we get the third act and redemption I just do not care. Yes, a nice emotional ending, indeed a fitting ending but I struggled to get over the finish line

Started The Audacity of Hope on the train today. Only read as much as a I could after reading my work documents first but already nearly at the end of the third chapter. Can already see myself reading it again. An engrossing read. might pick up the first book now

I really should be revising, but I'm confident I can tackle any question on german history.

But in preperaton for my course on South African history next year, deciding to read Nelson Mandela's autobiography.

Re: What book are you reading at the moment

Read a couple recently:

The Good Guy - Dean Koontz - great read
The Taking - Dean Koontz - very bleak, struggled a little (Koontz either writes excellent, fast paced books that I can't put down or I struggle with them - about 50/50)
Lord of The Silver Bow - David Gemmell - stunning book!

Now on Shield of Thunder (2nd in Gemmell's Troy series).

Oh and "The Blokes Guide To Pregnancy"

The Years of Rice and Salt: Kim Stanley Robinson: Amazon.co.uk: Books

Alternative history premised on Europe having been wiped out by a plague in the early Middle Ages leaving the next six hundred years clear for the clash of civilisations between Dar Al-Islam and the Far Eastern cultures. Maybe too much to cram into about 700 pages, but I'm nonetheless enjoying it.

Re: What book are you reading at the moment

After reading Halo: The Fall of Reach, Halo: The Flood, and Halo: First Strike recently, I'm now reading Halo: Ghosts of Onyx and I've enjoyed all of them.

I've got Halo: Contact Harvest and The Halo Graphic Novel on the way and am waiting for the Halo Uprising hardcover to be released, featuring all four separate editions, and a cheap Halo: The Cole Protocol to show up somewhere.

I had the first three books for a couple of years and never bothered reading them until a couple of months ago and I've been engrossed by the story, so thought I would carry on reading about the Halo universe.
