Allen Carr's Smoking book?

Someone told me about this the other day, sounds too good to be true! Have tried the patchs and other stuff which didnt seem to help much.

Anyone read this book? or gone to one of the clinics?

Re: Allen Carr's Smoking book?

I did read this book when i packed up the fags. I re-read the book when i felt like caving in and 5 years later have not had one puff. I did use the Nicorette Inhalator too which helped me at work in times of stress when the smokers were egging me on to have one.

It really did help me look at smoking in a different light, although i got loads of stick from people who smoked at the time

I got into AV at the same time, and invested all the money saved into my new found hobby. I vowed that if i ever started again, i'd flog the lot and start from scratch when i stopped again.

Not in a million years

Re: Allen Carr's Smoking book?

just placed a order for it off amazon. From what I understand you are alowed to smoke during the reading? Or are you meant to stop before?
Is it some kind of hypnotism?

Re: Allen Carr's Smoking book?

You can smoke while reading it, if fact the book encourages you to do so. I stopped the day I started to read it rather than during the reading.

It's not hypontism.....just states a lot of obvious facts that makes you think differently about cigarettes. I was a sceptic beforehand but it works for many people.

Go for it.

TBH i had already quit about 4 weeks before reading the book. I picked it up at the airport and read it on the plane on the way to Cyprus. It was enough to keep me off em for the 2 week holiday

I was in stitches when the plane landed and all the smokers went running like sheep to get their fix just like the book described

I also re-read around Christmas time when i nearly caved again.

Good luck "Stopping"

Re: Allen Carr's Smoking book?

cheers for you input guys. im having a op on my knee in a month and the doc has advised i quit before (sure he says that to everyone) so its seems the best time for me to stop.
I dont believe in "cutting down" it would make it worse, im hoping to get my mother to stop at the same time as in the last 2 years she has developed bad asthma.

Also been thinking about what i could do with all the saved money! 25ish a day is about £6.50 which is around £45 a week. Might set up a "quiting cigs account" with a direct debit going in!

Re: Allen Carr's Smoking book?

I used the book and thought it was great.

I took my time reading it - it's split up into about 50 small chapters of 3-4 pages each. I made sure I fully absorbed what he was saying in each chapter before moving on.

In a way I kind of mind-washed myself whilst reading the book - which is, I suppose what the book hopes to achieve.

The only problem with it I found was it turned me into an annoying anti-smoker ready to slag off anyone who smokes and tut at people outside pubs / railway stations / offices etc etc

Re: Allen Carr's Smoking book?

I found the book helped me too but I'd already developed a healthy hatred of smoking and looked at every ciggie i smoke with loathing. and i think it helped that i didn't enjoy smoking - i'd sort of trained myself to think like that and then giving up was a fairly easy thing to do.

the book uses simple language to go over some very basic points over and over again to try and convince you that there's nothing good about smoking.

giving up smoking was one of the best things i've ever done - 2 years without a ciggie now and that last cigarette is definitly the last one i'll ever smoke.

to anyone who wants to give up and does try the book, then the best of luck.

It is exactly that. It trains your mind to give up smoking. Great book and great technique. I read the book and, contrary to his advice used patches for 2 weeks to break routine, but applied the rest of the techniques and ....1 year smoke free and counting

Re: Allen Carr's Smoking book?

Read the book over four and a half years ago and haven't smoked since and nor do I ever feel like smoking again.
In fact it's threads like these that remind me that I used to be a smoker, otherwise I never think about 'em or that I ever smoked!
Highly recommended book, best read ever

Re: Allen Carr's Smoking book?

recently read the book - smoked for 14-15 years daily. Never even contemplated stopping before.

After reading the book I've now been off the fags for 24days and I've saved £120!
I've got a little app from the iphone appstore called quitter which tells you how much you've saved.

To be honest, I enjoy a good drink and although in the last 24 days I've had several I've not even wanted a cigarette and I can happily stand and chat to people that are smoking (promised myself I won't turn into a hatred filled ex smoker ) You do notice that people smell pretty bad - I'm just amazed that I smelt like that for 15 years!

Re: Allen Carr's Smoking book?

I didnt use the book, but not had a cigarette in three weeks now.

Think the main difference this time for stopping was i used the impetus of the day of my starting work as a drive for stopping, so there was an energy behind the quiting. Also been off the booze for three weeks and lost half a stone. Feel great, and now the smell of a cigarette makes me feel sick.
