Recommended philosophy books

So I was wandering in a well known high street store because my flatmate was asking about the latest sci-fi cash-in. Glanced in a little book and the question

"can an 'ought' be derived from an 'is'?"

was proposed. So can anyone recommend some nice casual philosophy books that I will never read because I have a habit of buying coffee table reading?

The name of the book already escapes me so I am looking to: you! I am not looking for "Father's Day" humour reads and neither am I looking at degree level, so something introductory and relaxing is welcomed

Thank you

Can't help on the books but I reckon I can put you in touch with someone who supplies black polo necked jumpers

Re: Recommended philosophy books

There are a number of "Socrates for beginners" type publications or maybe something like History of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russell http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History...sophy_(Russell)

The book assumes no knowledge of philosophy and is very accessible

Re: Recommended philosophy books

I know you didn't want degree level, but this is a great book from my former tutor - CLICKY

Neil Duxbury is an intellectual giant in the Jurisprudence field.

Re: Recommended philosophy books

If you want something simple don't read Kant.

René Descartes Discourse on a Method, or,
The Last Days Of Socrates

Of course you could get a book that collates several key themes of many peoples books.

Re: Recommended philosophy books

Done a lot of semi-light philosophy reading. The two books that come instantly to mind are:
Sophie's World - Jostein Gaarder. Or the seminal, Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance - Robert M Pirsig
