The Road - Cormac McCarthy

Couldn't put this down. Absolutley amazing book.

Easily read. Really bleak. But astonishing writing. Have to recommend all fathers to read this.

Anyone else read this and what are your thoughts?

Re: The Road - Cormac McCarthy

Am due to pick up the audiobook tomorrow or Friday from my local library. I've heard and read a lot about it so I'm looking forward to it.

I really enjoyed the adaptation of No Country for Old Men by the Coen brothers. I hope the audiobook creates a lot of atmosphere and intensity.

Cheers

I agree - a fantastic book. A book about desperation and hope, love and despair. The best book I've read in some time

A fantastic book - the way he uses language to create mood is unparalleled.

It's not the sort of book I'd say I 'enjoyed' reading but it is rewarding.

I wonder if the film will capture any of it well - I somehow doubt it.

Totally agree its not an "enjoyed" book but it is an amazing experience and journey to take with the Man and his Son. One of my top 5 easily.

McCarthy's prose style is perfect for setting mood as the words seem to tumble into your head as easily as he thought them. Brilliant author and superb work of fiction.

Started to read this on Saturday and I'm almost finished. It is a powerful story.

Sorry to spoil the party here, but it just didn't do it for me.

It was a good book but not great. Perhaps I got too excited about it before reading it, after seeing so many rave reviews?

Fantastic read. I think the ending, however, was a bit of a let down.

Think it was this that did it for me - the book itself came me reading and interested the whole way through, but the ending was very anti-climatic for me.

I enjoyed it immensely. The ending was a bit anti-climatic, but I can't really see where else it could have gone (some kind of awful deus ex machina aside).

I have mixed feelings about the film though. After The Proposition, Hilcoat definitely seems the right choice of director, but the strength of the book is it's prose, and I can't see the film being able to replicate that...

Couldn't agree more - I hope they do it justice.

Judging by the casting, the wife, old man and the man they meet at the end are going to have far greater parts than in the book.

Thanks for the tip - started reading this last night in the bath - 150 pages later I was somewhat cold and wrinkly

Fantastic on so many levels.

But not an 'enjoyable' book - but totally engrossing.

I am rather sad in that I haven't read any of his other books, I enjoyed the way he puts the images in your mind, what others should I read?

I liked No Country for Old Men (the film is quite a faithful adaptation) and The Crossing; couldn't take to (but persevered with) Blood Meridian at all

Oh yes, I forgot about No Country for Old Men, I loved the film. I will give The Crossing a go.
Thanks!
