Man Booker short listed books

Do you consider the short list a good recommendation for books? Do you have any Booker short list or winning books you would particularly recommend?

I've read the odd short listed book in the past and I would say they guarantee a good technical writing style even if the plot may not be to your taste. I have Life of Pi on my to read list and this years Wolf Hall winner sounds like a good read.

Re: Man Booker short listed books

I don't go out of my way to read books that have won or been nominated for awards but if something takes my fancy I'll give it a go. I've recently read 'Life of Pi' and thoroughly enjoyed it and have just finished 'The Road' and thought it was excellent.
I might give Wolf Hall a shot as it sounds like my type of book.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Life of Pi, I'll be starting that one soon myself.

I wasn't impressed with Life of Pi at all tbh...not sure what the fuss was all about...found it dire.

Finished Life of Pi over the weekend, thought it was mainly good and the ending great. The start of the book deals with his faith and zoo keeping in probably too much detail, went on a bit for my liking. The shipwreck section was well written and quite gruesome in places. There were times when I was thinking What the? No way, shaking head in disbelief, etc. But the ending tied everything up in a great <sp>Usual Suspects</sp> type way that made me want to re-read the middle section again.
