Magazines

Does anyone frequently buy any magazine titles? I know the era of lads mag is over and a lot of technology information could be gotten quicker and easier from sites like this one but you can't beat putting your feet up and reading a good magazine.

I have a subscription to Empire and have been buying BBC History for the last 12 months and will get a subscription to that too. I have started reading a new film magazine Filmstar which is quite good and once in a blue moon will buy Stuff just to browse the purdy pictures.

Re: Magazines

I'm trapped in a cycle where every couple of months I'll buy a magazine or two, then read through it and remember why I'd stopped buying them - because they're full of ads and useless crap, and contain very little that will entertain or educate me. That's enough to put me off buying any more magazines for a couple of months until one day I spot a shiny cover...and on the cycle goes.

Re: Magazines

The Economist.

Fantastic read - apart from Private Eye, the only magazine I now get regularly.

(some may of course argue that it's a weekly newspaper).

Re: Magazines

I used to buy PC Format and a few other random computing mags every month. I had a stack of cover disks going back 3 or 4 years.

Before that it was Amiga Power or CU Amiga, going back even further, I was a Crash subscriber.

These days, all that info is on the web, more up-to date and free!

I very rarely buy magazines thesedays, only if I'm away from home, going on the train, etc. I wonder how much longer magazines can last. I see there is a lot more advertising in magazines recently, that's always put me off anyway, but I suppose it's just them trying to scrape in some more revenue.

Re: Magazines

My list used to be longer, but my current subscriptions are:

CustomPC
PCPro
PCZone

PCZone will lapse when my subscription ends in a few months, but CustomPC and PCPro are very useful to me and to my job knowledge, and they are cheap as a subscription, so I will keep these for the foreseeable future I think.

I used to get the following on top of these:

High Definition Review - Reviews of Blu-Rays got very weakly written, not enough info on the quality, and old news when coming to these forums daily. I get all my reviews from Blu-ray.com - Blu-ray Movies, Players, Recorders, Media and Software now.

PCGamer - dropped a while back as I started to like Zone far better.

DVD Review - Dropped because of cash reasons

Re: Magazines

PCPro was quite good, I haven't picked up a copy for a while, but it was always the most no-nonsense and technical of the mainstream mags.

Re: Magazines

I think from a technical point of view and for reviews and such, magazines are defiantly showing their inadequacies over the internet. But with a good film magazine that can get reviews, opinions, critiques and articles with the actors/directors themselves, all rounded up in one nice package to be read any place anywhere, they still hold a place in my opinion.

Re: Magazines

I have a subscription to FHM which I keep meaning to cancel as its gone downhill, very sharply. I never seem to get around to it and its kinda good "throne" material.

Re: Magazines

I don't buy FHM or any of the 'Lads' mags. I do however, do occasional 12 hour night shifts where the off duty lounge is full of old copies of Nuts, Loaded, FHM, etc, etc.

TBH, I used to enjoy the laddish humour, FHM's true stories were always good for a giggle. However, recently, all the mags seem to have descended to the level of soft porn and ads for premium rate 'chat' lines.

Re: Magazines

The only magazine subscription I have is for BBC Focus, as i'm in to science and technology. I do occasionally pick up other magazines, usually if i'm going on a train journey or similar and fancy something to read - or if i'm in the market for a new tv or something, I'll sometimes buy a mag to supplement online research.

Yes, my experience too, although, the shiny covers are not as tempting nowadays either. When you find that you can read all the actual content over breakfast, you know you've wasted a fiver

Re: Magazines

My Brother often buys SFX and I have to say I quite enjoy flicking through it. It has a good genre book section that has on multiple occasions thrown up something I have ended up really liking.

Have to confess being an 'Eye' addict. Have been for too many years.

As much as the journalism is spot on, some of the cartoons are just brilliant.

Re: Magazines

It is quite sad that if there is any one thing I spend most on, it isn't clothes or CDs, it's magazines! I subscribe to Custom PC and PC Zone, but used to subscribe to Terrorizer, Maxim (in my early 20's), Practical Photography, Outdoor Photography, Jane's Police Review, Total Guitar, and now buy on a regular basis the following magazines, PC Gamer, PC Pro, PC Format, Guitarist, Military Modeling and sometimes buy DVD & Blu-ray review, PSM, PSW. My wife has tried to enrol me in Magazines Anoynomous but I have stated to her I don't have a problem

Re: Magazines

Aeroplane Monthly (aeroplanemonthly.com)

I used to do PC Zone, and Rotor World (RC Helicopters) but stopped after some years when I realised that they came through the door, I skimmed through the bits I like and odd appropriate review and it was over in less than an hour. Furthermore, once you have removed the adverts and the reviews of stuff you have no interest in there isn't much left.

Aeroplane Monthly by comparison is more like a reference book. I get loads of reading out of it. But you need to be an aeroplane geek.

I tend to take out the discount offer with free gift. Once the year is up and the price goes up, I decline and then take out a new discount offer with another free gift.

Cheers,

Nigel

Re: Magazines

Used to buy Bizarre magazine every month for atleast 3 years but finally after about 6 issues of what I thought were trash I stopped buying it. Like another member said you keep buying them hoping it will be a good issue but never is.

Same goes for I-D magazine, though I only bought about a years worth. Don't buy any magazines now.
