Graphic Novels

Anyone else read graphic novels? Thought it might be good to have a thread to discuss them?

Currently got a little pile to read at home...

The latest 3 '100 bullets' books - great gritty crime / conspiracy theory set of comics.
A couple of Judge Dredd case files books - 2000ad is a bit of a hangover from when i was a kid some great stories and characters in there.

Been reading quite a few of the Marvel Essential books (republishing some of the characters / groups from the begining in black and while collections). These are good for seeing how the characters change from their basic beginings to much more complex characters now.

Re: Graphic Novels

Yeah I agree that one it is excellent, and I thought the movie was pretty good too.

Some of the other ones that have been made into movies are good too e.g. V for Vendetta and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

I've read American Splendour, quite dark, but an interesting and sometimes humorous read.

Re: Graphic Novels

They chronicle the life and times of the Author Harvey Pekar in comic form and probably most famous for documenting his experiences with Cancer. Doesn't sound like a subject you'd get much from, but they are well crafted and he manages to bring some brilliant observations to everyday lives.

Re: Graphic Novels

Sounds interesting, just looked it up on wiki too. A bit different the usual hero type graphic novels... Might try and pick up one of the anthologies once I've been through my pile of 'to reads'.

Re: Graphic Novels

Watchmen is good, difficult to top.

I also read Wanted which is a bit light and nothing like the film, it is all about Super Heroes etc.

The one I read most recently is Cairo and I thoroughly enjoyed that, it would make a great film.

I figured you were a Bisley fan when I saw your Avatar. Have you read Judgement on Gotham? Some fantastic work there.

On the Marvel Side, I read Marvel Zombies a few months back, quite a fun story, even if it is miles off track.

Agree wanted is good, much better than the movie. Read somewhere that the main character is meant to be based on eminem.

Havibg a look around and Cairo looks like another for my 'to buy' list.

Surprisingly never read it. But wasn't into Batman until recently, liked the movies but never read the comics until I picked up Year One recently, now there are a few of the Miller ones on my 'to buy' list and a couple of other like Killing Joke and the Batman/Dredd crossover.

Zombies is good fun, read the first one last month... Want to read the others butnot sure where the story can go from the ending. I think the third book has the guy from medevil dead in it, by the look of the cover!

Re: Graphic Novels

Graphic Novels to read:

Watchmen

Ultimates (the first especially)

2000AD reprints (I would wait for the Sam Slade stuff and Rogue Trooper to be re-printed though, as the current format is 100 pages or so compared to 200+ pages) - Strotium Dog, Ace Garp, Judge Dread.

Batman Year One

Batman Dark Knight

Bone

Sandman

Strangers In Paradise

I'm not a Batman fan either (Judgement is the only Batman I've read), but I do love Bisley's work. The series of ABC Warriors when Simon and SMS were working alternately was both comical and frustrating. I hated SMS making a fudge of important bits of the story.

I tried to get hold of some of my old favourites (ABC Warriors) a while ago and was told they were being re-done. Change of owner/publisher? I'd love to read Bad Company or Dr and Quinch again.

Couldn't think which one they did together so looked it up, was the Black Hole which was quite early on in the stories if i remember right and a bit of a spin off from a Nemesis story making it kind of hard to distinguish (in my memory) the nemesis and ABC bits. Sure I have it on my shelf so will give it a look over to see what i think

Re: Graphic Novels

They are reprinting some of the stories in large volumes think so far there are Nemesis (3 books), Judge Dredd (at least 12 and ongoing) & Strontium Dog (not sure how many as not one of my favorites).

Pretty sure I saw an Anderson one somewhere too.

Would love to see the first Bad Company story arc come out again and maybe Zenith or Mean Team...

...just noticed the time... i'm off for the weekend

Re: Graphic Novels

Got the graphic novels of Terry Pratchett's Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic which were ok.

I fair enjoyed the Batman halloween special, was basically just the 13 comics put together in one easy package

Definitely something I need to read more but just never know a good source of finding good graphic novels and money is never free enough to just throw as stuff and hope for the best!

Long Halloween was brilliant - Tim Sales Batman stuff is very unique and I think only second to Frank Miller.

Re: Graphic Novels

My all time favourite has to be Preacher - absolutely legend. Garth Ennis is one sick puppy! His new series The Boys takes it even further. Has to be read if only to see Simon Pegg as a comic book character.

Other faves:
Transmetropolitan
The Walking Dead (relentlessly grim, but oh-so satisfying)
100 Bullets
Sin City
Batman: Year One, Long Halloween, The Killing Joke, Knightfall, Joker, TDKR, Hush
Y: The Last Man

Awesome! I used to have about 40 of the Titan 2000AD books, ABC Warriors, Bad Co, etc. I bought one a week from a little bookshop in Chelmsford when I was at college. I think Chopper's SuperSurf story was one of the first.

Unfortunately, I gave them all away to a mate when I left home.

Re: Graphic Novels

I want the RoboHunter and Rogue Trooper (probably my fav) stories to be reissued, as I am nopt paying for 4 books that could be the same format as ones I have and merged into 2.

I have every 2000ADs from 100 onwards to 1000odd (only because I won an ebay auction cheaply, I personally stopped collecting them from 520? onwards when they changed paper format) and a scattering of 30 or 40 from 2 - 100, so dont really want to pay over the odds for something I have already.

Those of you about to buy the Judge Dread ones, be aware that even the reprints do not included the banned issues (Burger Wars), you will need to find them from other sources should you wish to read them.

Lot of 2000Ad fans which is good to see

I've seen the first robohunter case files on Amazon (not out yet but available for preorder)...

Robo-Hunter: The Droid Files Vol. 1: Amazon.co.uk: John Wagner: Books

Not sure how much is in each one but the Dredd/Nemesis ones contain a good number of issues in each book. The whole Nemesis storyline was covered in 3.

Nice catch! Thats what I am talking about - reprints in this format. They go with all the other books, and they are not taking the mick with 5 volumes that could be condensed to 2.

I also enjoyed Black Hole which is a pretty strange graphic novel about a bunch of kids who contract a sexually transmitted disease resulting in different mutations. It is rumoured that a film is in the works, to be directed by David Fincher so you get the idea as to how out there it is.

Re: Graphic Novels

I've been collecting the Marvel Omnibuses which are huge, Some 1000 + pages. Recoloured art complete with original letters pages. Very nice indeed. Need a strong shelf to hold them too.

So far the collection consists of

The Amazing Spider-Man volume 1

Fantastic Four Volume 1

The Uncanny X-Men

Wolverine

Secret Wars

The Silver Surfer

Devil Dinosaur

Tomb Of Dracula

Amazing Fantasy

Punisher
