Decent audiobooks?

I've heard a few stinkers in my time, particularly when the narrator has to pull off a variety of accents in conversation with each other or has a less than clear voice.

So if anyone has any recommendations, then i'd be pleased to hear them, whatever the genre.

The Time Travelers Wife.

Really good you believe that the people who narrate it are the characters.

I dismissed it for years thinking it was a book just for women. I was more then wrong and would now put it into my top 5.

+1

Also 'Last Chance to see' by Douglas Adams, and read by him also.

Factual read, with whit and humour.

Also Starship Titanic read by Terry Jones I think, just brilliant with a few laugh out loud moments.

Also Dirk Gently also read by Doug Adams, In fact just get all his audio books, you can also get Hitchhikers guide read by him.

Re: Decent audiobooks?

I'd also be interested in finding some good audiobooks for both my mum and I. She is disabled and unable to read novels now unfortunately and I'd love to be able to give her an audiobook to listen to.

Will drop by the library asap and try and get one for her. She likes thrillers and horror. Probably more genres but can't think of any at the minute.

I'd also like to get some audiobooks. The last one I remember having - and loving to bits. I can still hear the background tune - was Little Red Ridinghood when I was a nipper. It was actually an amazing experience listening to it in bed with the covers tucked over me.

It's been too long. I need to listen and be excited my a good audiobook.

Will have a rummage round the local to see what I can find.

Cheers

Re: Decent audiobooks?

I recently have been listening to a few books on the way to and from work as a bit of variety. I downloaded a number of them from Itunes where you can get some very cheap (£1 - £4) ones under the 'Classics' section.

I have had 80 days around the works, gullivers travel, an issac asimov ones and now the Woman in White by wilkie collins.

Re: Decent audiobooks?

Hello folks,

I'd recommend the Lemony Snicket series of books on audio tape/cd read by Tim Curry. They are most entertaining and very listenable.

Cheers,

Peter

Re: Decent audiobooks?

That sounds interesting. I really enjoyed the film with Jim Carey. I'll see if I can get them at the local library.

In general:

I borrowed some audiobooks...

Dune
The Algebraist
The Bourne Identity
This Sceptred Isle

So far I've only listened to This Sceptred Isle which I'm enjoying. Learning lots of things about our country and its people that I wasn't aware of. I guess I'd prefer less commentary on the rulling and upper classes and more about the middle and lower classes. I can relate to the latter easier than I can the former. It's important, of course, to learn about the decisions the politicians and aristocracy made back when, but a little more discourse on the effect it had on the man on the street would be welcome.

Still, I'd recommend it.

Re: Decent audiobooks?

I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoy Tom Clancy's works on audiobooks. Nearly finished "Without Remorse". "Debt of Honor" is next on the list.

Re: Decent audiobooks?

World War Z is by far and away the best audiobook I've ever heard. The one segment is read by Mark Hamill with a breathtaking performance.

I thought Dracula was very good - the unabridged version can drag a bit though

Re: Decent audiobooks?

The matchmaker of perigord is light hearted and fun.
Perfume - story of a murderer is obviously a bit darker
Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy (radio show) is brilliant
Terry Pratchett books are good (I prefer the unabridged ones by Isis audio)

I also enjoy listening to radio shows like the Goon show
