Question Book Cataloguing site or Tool?

Does anyone use, or know of a good book cataloguing tool? There's plenty around for DVD, Games and music, etc. What I'm after is a site that allows you to search and mark books you've read and include a section where you can add comment. I'd prefer an online solution, but if it has to be downloaded software, I'd look into that too.

Re: Book Cataloguing site or Tool?

I think librarything is the most well known.

I was looking at a few of these some years ago when I was mucking about with the idea of writing my own. I have a list of them somewhere, but from memory:
listal
bibliophile or bibliophil?
shelfari

I think they're all www. and .com.

Re: Book Cataloguing site or Tool?

I probably should have mentioned that it's 200 books for free.
I'm waiting for the $ to collapse before I shell out for life membership. Of course, stingy gits can set up more than one account...

Re: Book Cataloguing site or Tool?

OK, I set up accounts with Shelfari and Library thing and gave them a go over the weekend. First impressions, Shelfari had the nicer interface and seemed easier to use. But I spent more time with Library Thing, which eventually proved a lot more detailed and found a couple of books Shelfari failed to.

I'll keep both accounts running for a while, but Library thing is looking like the one I'll be using most, the 200 limit will be the decider, but it is ad free, so if and when I need to upgrade the account, £16 for a life membership does not sound like it will break the bank

Re: Book Cataloguing site or Tool?

I've revisited some of these sites that I was looking at a few years ago.

LibraryThing
  1. Ability to sort on author surname (seems obvious, but they don't all seem to do it unless I've just missed something).
  2. The concept of a "work", i.e. something at a higher level than book. Avoids having reviews in multiple places.
One thing that I find a bit irritating is that if you follow links to other books already registered on the site, you can't then add them directly to your collection. It forces you into the search function.

Shelfari
Just looked at this again and it seems to be better than I remembered. I don't like the "shelf" views, but the edit view is usable.

Listal
Annoying that you can't sort by author surname.

Bibliophil
I can't work out how to add books. Possibly by ISBN only.

Gurulib
I though it looked promising, but then saw that it wasn't sorting by author surname.

reader2
Looks better, less cluttered than some of the others but I'm not sure about the usability.

Re: Book Cataloguing site or Tool?

Here's another one (from the Collectorz series): Book Database Software, catalog every book in your home library by ISBN

Re: Book Cataloguing site or Tool?

I use delicious library - its handy to be able to scan the bar code to get the book details using your webcam
