Book signings - Do you bring your own books?

Never been to a book signing before, but a certain TV personality is signing books at a local'ish store. I'm going to be in the area so thought why not.

So, are you forced to buy the book from the store are able you able to bring your own?

Re: Book signings - Do you bring your own books?

All the ones I've seen you are expected to buy the book from bookstore hosting the signing.

So if the book's RRP is £15 that is generally what you pay, you can't pop into Asda or Tesco and pick it up for £7 on the way.

Cheers,

Nigel

Thats more then likeley the whole reason to throw a book singing to get you into there store so you can buy there book. other wise what would the point be as the store will get nothing from it.

Re: Book signings - Do you bring your own books?

i asked a similar question about a year ago and got slated on this forum, because i could buy the book half price online from the same store i was going to, and got called a cheap skate by a mod. But this forum have a classified and bargains section, go figure. I rang the store in question about bringing the book with me, she said bring the receipt with you.

Fair point! It was more that I already have the book in my case. I suppose it's no big deal really, it's worth the premium to have it signed my Grant Mitchell

Exclamation Re: Book signings - Do you bring your own books?

Hi,

Firstly, if the person is even remotely popular, be prepared to queue for at least 3-4 hours before the signing! You'll be surprised how many people turn-up at these things!

Technically, you should buy the book from the store that is doing the signing. However, not all stores enforce this rule, nor necessarily will the people who are doing the signing (or their managers/bouncers/PA).

If you don't want the book, in question, because you can get it cheaper elsewhere, or already have it, it shouldn't be too wildly inappropriate to bring another item to be signed instead (or to sneak in your copy, you've already bought).

However, once again, it does depend on the store, the person doing the signing session, and whether you can just turn-up on the day in question and queue to see your chosen personality, or if you have to buy tickets to it.

If you have to buy a ticket for the signing, unless it stipulates on the Terms & Conditions on it, that only items purchased at the store can/will be signed, then you should really be allowed to take something of your own to be autographed.

But, having said that, if it's a freebie signing, and the personality is popular, time and the store itself may dictate what the celebrity will or will not autograph. Some stores and celebs will sign anything and everything you ask, others will restrict you to only merchandise bought at the time, and others will restrict you to just one item, but any single item, bought on the day or not.

If you really want their autograph, why not take along your copy, buy another one, get both signed, and then flog the unwanted, autographed one for a reasonable wad of cash?!

That's a nice way around the situation!

Talking Re: Book signings - Do you bring your own books?

Hi,

Slightly off-topic, but nonetheless: this reminds me of the current adverts and posters for Sharpie pens and markers, that are being promoted by David Beckham! Someone at that advertising agency was being either deeply ironic, or the company has no clue about Beckham's actual communication abilities!

Almost as funny as the Charmin ad, which has cartoon bears promoting their bog-roll! Do bears crap in woods?! Well, clearly they must do, if they use Charmin bog-roll!

What next? Stevie Wonder advertising Specsavers; Phil Spector advertising Loreal hair-mouse?

Re: Book signings - Do you bring your own books?

When I went to see David Attenborough at Ottakars before it became Waterstones they allowed you to just bring anything you wanted for him to sign, no need to buy from the shop itself, so I took a book and a dvd set. I went in the day before to ask to make sure, and on the day there was an enormous queue full of people with old Attenborough books - some old hands at the lark had brought chairs! I managed to get there near the start so was close to the head of the queue, which snaked a long way down the high street!
