Picture break up on DVD

What causes this problem, just that I have one where it goes in to blockage and audio screaching. There are no scratches on the disk.

Is it down to poor encoding?

Cheers

Re: Picture break up on DVD

Could be encoding or the disc gluing pressing process might be poor - Tv series don't tend to get the same treatment as from the major studio's.
What about your player? Experienced same problem(s) on other discs? Is it old? Is it (sorry) 'cheap'?

Not really had any problems with picture break up on other discs, although it does sometimes downright refuse to read/play them. It is fairly old probably getting on for 10+ years now.

Re: Picture break up on DVD

Old DVD players did have problems with some DVD's.

The Matrix (The first edition)
The Deep Blue Sea

Are a couple that caused problems.

Re: Picture break up on DVD

Yeah the early players did experience playback issues with various discs (I remember Gladiator being another one) and the solution was either the disc got recalled and repressed or (like with the Matrix) a firmware alteration was made to the machine.
I had a very reliable Sony DVP S335 (still love that machine) but after years of intense usage the only problem it developed in the end was going from playing everything you threw at it to skipping/freezing on discs with a touch of dust to the odd minor surface scratch to not playing a single rental to locking up on my existing collection.

Sounds like the laser eventually giving out.

To the OP, sounds like a duff disc, best to try it in a few other players first.

When I got X3 it had an awful part in the forest scene where it skipped but no blemish could be found on the disc surface, was replaced by the retailer.

Yeah it was the laser that gave up the ghost in the end (sorry, was meant to have added that detail to the end of my last post) but it wasn't worth the expense to get it fixed when it was easier to spend the money on a new player in my switch over to Upscaling.

If the disc is a duff copy then better get it looked into quick because if you had to import it and you've had it a while then it may not be possible to get it swapped or refunded.
I Had that problem when I brought Ghost Rider on HD DVD (French release) and paid a premium for it, only to have it sit there for a few months before I got round to watching it. Problems with firmware etc on HD DVD players aside, this disc just refused to start up and whenever it did every audio track was out of sync. I discovered afterwards that it is an actual disc issue with some of the initial batch but it was too late for me to sort out and now I look at it wondering what could have been.

Re: Picture break up on DVD

This used to be a big problem with early DVD. It may have been the discs or the player or a combo of both. It shouldn't happen now. What's your gear? The experts on the Forums maybe able to help.

Regards
Bri
