Really,really bad idea!

People seem to forget the problems with the combo hd-dvds,players bricked etc,in fact the combo disc could be the worst possible thing for blu-ray.

Please let it die a slow death.25GB blu-ray layer just isn't enough,unless they compress the hell out of it.

If it works and gets more people buying into Blu-Ray then I'm all for it.

I guess people who may eventually go Blu-Ray can at least start a collection before a player although at the current prices there's no excuse

I agree. Terrible idea to make 25GB discs the standard in order to put a DVD on as well. That's before any possible technical problems

So if it went mainstream will the consumer have to stump up the premium with no doubt a few more added cents to pad the profit per disk or are the distributors going to absorb the extra costs to push the format.
Personally I hate DVD flippers, detested HD DVD combo and will avoid like the plague a *******ised Blu release.

A clever idea, but to force us to accept 25gb Blu Ray is too much of a price to pay, and you'd never get a red laser through the 50gb layers.

I'm not saying I think this is a good idea, but I think 25gb would be more than enough for most sub-2 hour films with a lossless soundtrack unless there are lots of extras.

Some HD DVDs (30gb) had 3½ hour films with lossless soundtracks, PinP and lots of extras, and were said to look fantastic.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, for example, was 139 minutes long, got 5 star ratings for both video and (lossless) audio, and had a PinP track.

Most 90 minutes films should have absolutely no problems whatsoever with 25gb.

My biggest problem with this sort of thing is that it might muddy the waters a little.

Seems like a step back. HD DVD did this with 5GB extra. Will it be a return to DD+? With blu-ray players now at £100 having more than one player in the home might be viable. Then there's confusion. Some disks play in a DVD player some don't. Also I thought a stumbling block would be the DVD forum itself. Their official format got trounced. Are they now happy with this? Is blu-ray now 'official'?

Odd this. I remember when the HD-DVD/Blu-ray war was at its height, the blu-ray fanboys (at the time) kept shoving the HD-DVD combo discs into the HD-DVD fanboys faces. Now it seems blu-ray is going down this route.

Why I have absolutely no idea.

Why would you want to buy a blu-ray combo disc at a premium price, just so you can play the SD DVD side? Even if you have it in mind to buy a blu-ray player in the future, the difference in price would surely mean it's better to buy the SD DVD now at a few quid and get the blu-ray when you have a blu-ray player.

This should be steered well clear of. Why would someone buy a combo disc for £15-20 for the SD version when they can get it for a fiver on DVD anyway? If they want to put an SD DVD version on a seperate disc in the same packaging for the same price then fine, i don't mind, i can give the SD to my kids. Unless it's Irreversible of course

It's not DVD that's in danger of dying here.......

BD needs to do everything it can to gain traction, this is an an excellent way to do it.

From what I've seen of BD rips, 25gigs should be more than enough to hold a typical film with a TrueHD/DTS-MA and a DD5.1 sountrack. If a film really has such great extras that it needs much more space then that can warrant a second disk.
