Is it fair for retailers such as play.com to claim £12.00/40% saving because they hold RRP as £29.99 but sell for £17.99

In recent times the price for blu-rays, dvds, games etc has come down considerably (more so online imo). I personally know i would never pay £29.99 for a 'normal' blu-ray, and i'm sure online retailers know this also... so how can they get away with claiming savings of £12/40%. Is the RRP still actually £29.99 in this case for kung fu panda?

Any thoughts on this?

Yes. A high RRP makes it look more of a saving.

Prince Caspian has a RRP of £26.99. The new Indiana Jones is also RRP of £29.99.

Oh yeah i realise high rrp gives the impression of an increase in savings, but for how long will the people who set these keep them so high when in reality it never happens.

It does happen though in places like HMV and Zaavi.

If DVD prices can be the same level after 10 years, I would expect Blu Ray to be the same for quite some time. Wall-E and Hancock on DVD still have a RRP of £22.99.

Agreed, titles do seem to be closer to their rrp in stores than online as is the nature of increase running costs on the high street... but i cant help but feel like it's a bit of a con or giving a false impression online.
I guess the only cost i and we should really care for is the sale price... thats what it boils down too i suppose

price is king in my eyes - regardless of 1% or 90% claimed discounts, it's the final price and wether i'm comfortable to pay it which decides - (basically £14.99 max for a new BR personally)

I've been looking to build up my HD-DVD collection and I've noticed that some sites have got films for £5 down from an RRP of £20 and other sites are still selling them for the RRP.

Thank you. The same thoughts struck me yesterday as I was lurking around stores and online stores for some new Blu-Ray flick. Pretty much all the big retailers are claiming this fanasy saving. I mean where are all these other stores that actually sell Iron Man, Casino Royale and whatnot for £16-27. Why would Zavvi, HMV and Amazon choose to permanently discount their discs like that if they didn't had to? HD-DVD on the other hand is understandable since the format is literally dying and that some stores would discount in order to clear stock. Either way the saving doesn't get to me as it's the end price that count and how far away it's from a the price of a DVD. Sadly it's mostly the not-so-big titles that sell for ridiculous prices above £20.
