Are there any 1080i 50Hz blu-ray discs?

I was going through the specifications of the Panasonic DMP-BD35 player, and it wasn't clear whether or not it can output 1080i at 50Hz via HDMI. Its instruction manual seems to imply that it can only do 1080p 24Hz or 1080i 60Hz.

But I was wondering if there are actually any 1080i 50Hz blu-ray discs?

If someone made a Blu-Ray disc of Wimbledon or the Beijing Olympics, which were transmitted in 1080i at 50Hz, I guess they would be.

Re: Are there any 1080i 50Hz blu-ray discs?

Just as a matter of curiosity - I only ever see references to 1080p/24 and 1080i/50. Is it not possible for 1080p video material to be encoded at 50Hz if that's the way it was shot?

I'm not particularly technical in this area, so my apologies if this is a silly question - but can someone explain it a bit more?

No, only 23.976/24 fps is supported at 1080p on Blu-ray. So anything shot at 1080p/25 needs to be stored as 1080i/50 on the disc, and likewise 1080p/30 gets stuffed into 1080i/60. As long as the player doesn't do anything funny they should come out perfectly though.

Anything that's actually 50 or 60 fps needs to be in 720p though.

And yes the European Panasonic BD35 will play any 50hz material (but the USA BD35 will not)

I wonder what the reasoning for this was? The 1080p/25 would have been very beneficial for Europeans and I don't see that adding it would have had any particularly onerous impact on early players. Something of an oversight in the specifications IMHO.

Indeed, although it should be noted that many TV programmes which are nominally 25p are actually edited and finished in the interlaced domain. You can usually spot this on end credits which often have 50Hz motion.
