I just got the Bluray of this for a fiver.
I don't have HD audio but the regular DTS and DD audio is the right way round.
I made a point of trying several scenes where things go from side to side.

But was it worth it?

Optimum once again deliver a picture too soft.
Watched a Bond Blu today aswell as browsing the most recent Harry Potter Blu and then tried Cliffhanger which was disappointingly soft in comparison but so are other Optimum discs.

I think in future if there is a US disc available of Optimum titles I shall go for that instead

So it doesn't look as good as a movie released last year? Hardly a fair comparison.

The PQ on Cliffhanger was never the issue imo - it's a perfectly nice transfer.

As the Bond movie I watched was For Your Eyes Only the comparison is more than fair especially as even Dr No from 1962 looks better.

The age of a movie rarely has anything to do with the reason a Bluray is substandard.

There are more than enough movies that are 40+ years old that are out on Blu in perfectly good transfers.

Optimums record shows it is they who are the problem , not the movies.

There is no reason that Cliffhanger should not look as good as any recent movies.
It's hardly an old film

I was referring to the recent Harry Potter - It's hardly fair to compare it to the Bond releases, as they are always going to have far more care taken with their transfers (one would hope ) than you avearge catalogue release.

Yes, but it's a bit unreasonable to expect a moderately succesful action flick from the 90s to get the red carpet restoration process. OK, there are obviously older movies that look better (Blade Runner springs to mind), but these are generally more universally appreciated movies that are likely to shift a decent number of copies. Again, I think Cliffhanger looks pretty decent.

Is it? Was the US release any better picture wise? I've not seen it, so I can't comment

Cliffhanger is what it is. Anamorphic movies of that vintage rarely 'pop' off the screen without a Bond-style restoration, and comparing it to a recent Super 35 production like Harry Potter is perfectly ridiculous.

I have more than 200 Blurays with movies and tv shows of all vintages.
I know when something is substandard.

Cliffhanger matches the inferior quality of other Optimum Blurays that I have.

If its the age of the movie or the restoration its had then why are It's A Wonderful Life (1946), Psycho (1960) , Planet of the Apes (1968),Dirty Harry (1971), The Breakfast Club (1985), The Sixth Day and the Rambo movies (US discs) etc etc all better

I'm assuming the US Cliffhanger might be better but I've not seen it so can't be sure

And I own 500 and disagree, so what does that prove?

Nowt wrong with the PQ of Optimum's disc.

I now have Sony's and it's virtually identical.

If you're happy with inferior quality that's up to you.
Your quality threshhold is clearly lower than mine.

You'd probably be happy with the current disc of The Beyond

Now now girls, let's curb this rubbish before one of you ends up getting a smack.

Let's chat like adults from now on, yes?

Thank you!

Back to the disc in question.
Nice that the bonus features from the R1 dvd have been included on the Bluray.
I don't think the UK dvd had them did it?
Mind you I might have ignored that because it was cut

was just thinking of ordering this as i nearly bagged it yesterday whilst in HMV

so the audio still hasn't been rectified for the rears despite having been re-issued?

so the question is, would it be worth taking 20 sec's to switch my rear left and right banana plugs to have it corrected?

The US Cliffhanger blu-ray is currently $7.99 from US Amazon. Once you add the $6.49 shipping charge, $14.48 in total, that's about £9. I know you can get the UK disc for a fiver but, for me, it's worth paying the extra few quid to get it without the audio problem.

I noticed something earlier when comparing caps from the UK disc to the US one. The US disc has obviously been fed through the dirt and scratch removal machine, as parts of the snow have been partially erased when compared to identical scenes on the UK release. Fairly minor, but worth mentioning.
