One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Does anyone have this yet ?

It's one of my all time faves but I'm wondering how much of an improvement over the DVD there's likely to be.

Would like to know opinions when someone gets it....

Cheers,
Kudos

Movietyme sent mine yesterday so I should have it in the next few days. I'll post my impressions when it arrives unless somebody else beats me to it in which case I'll still post my impressions just for the heck of it.

Re: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Got my copy this morning. I've watched the first 45 minutes or so and my impressions of the picture quality are pretty much what you might expect given it's a 33 year-old film. Having said that, due to the nature of how it was filmed, OFOTCN doesn't come close to high-def releases of chronologically earlier films like 'The Searchers'. It's a clean picture with little in the way of distracting grain and there's no macroblocking but there is a softness to the whole image which can hide a fair bit of detail. The most similar release I can think of in terms of picture quality is Warner's 'Deliverance'.

Ultimately, it's not demo material but it is easily the best transfer of this magnificent film that has been produced to date. However, it doesn't offer an especially giant leap over the 2-Disc DVD release so I'd only recommend the BD to fans or anyone who has never owned a copy of the film.

Sound is essentially the same as the DVD albeit with a slightly higher bit-rate: 640kbps Dolby Digital compared to 448kbps.

Re: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

High Def Digest have it reviewed, and give picture quality 3 out of 5 stars.

Whilst it will undoubtedly be the best version, I think I will keep my special edition dvd for this one.

Based on those screen caps there's a definite improvement in detail and contrast, and there even appears to be less print damage on the BD.
