'Metropolis' Coming to Blu-ray in 2009

There's no date yet, but Kino International says it is planning to bring the Fritz Lang classic 'Metropolis' to Blu-ray in early 2009.

Oft-cited as an inspiration for everything from 'Star Wars' to 'Blade Runner' to '2001: A Space Odyssey,' 1927's 'Metropolis' has had a lasting influence on the genre and, with a budget equivalent of nearly $200 million today, is widely considered to be the first true cinematic spectacle ever produced.

I really hope they release the Jeff Mills soundtrack version. By far the best version of it.

There is an original score to this and that should be the one but extra soundtracks could be an option. I have a Beta copy with a very good jazzy soundtrack.

Missing Metropolis footage found in Argentina

Chances of a full length recreation of Fritz Lang's classic movie Metropolis are much higher now, with the discovery of a copy of the movie that survived the re-editing process that followed the film's initial lukewarm reception in 1927.

Roughly a quarter of the film's footage, 948 metres, was excised and believed lost. However, a copy of the long version was taken to Argentina in 1928, eventually arriving at the Museo del Cine in Buenos Aires in 1992. New museum director Paula Felix-Didier examined the print this year and discovered it included 700 metres of previously lost footage.

"The discovery of the material thought to be lost forever leads to a new understanding of Fritz Lang's masterpiece," Helmut Possmann, chairman of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau Foundation told German paper Die Zeit, confirming that as rights holders, they felt "a responsibility to make the material available to the public."

Giorgio Moroder worked on a soundtrack for this movie circa 84 with the late great Freddie Mercury.

This spawned an excellent title track by Freddie called 'Love Kills' which he had written for 'The Works' Album only to reserve it for the film. Moroder's stamp is clearly on the cool synthy music.

Clips of Metropolis were used in 1984's Radio Ga Ga by Queen which was a big hit and made myself aware of Metropolis.

It would be nice to see the movie with it's Original, if there was one and alternative soundtracks such as the above mentioned.
