BluRay prices(greedy gits)

what can we do as forum members to get prices of blu rays down? How can we get who ever i charge of such things to listen ?
i want new blu rays at same price of new release dvds. how can a new dvd release be in a 5 for £30 within a few months and blu being £20 -£30
I think blu ray is fantastic but worry it will die given greedy pricing of discs compared to sd dvd. went into hmv today and prices are a joke, i know i could get cheaper online but how is a format going to get joe public behind it when dvd looks just as good on their 32" supermarket special lcd are they gonna pay £5 to £10 more for a blu ray than an dvd while doing the food shop. i dont think so! and vod gaining momentum fast can blu ray survive.i like the physical product so would choose bluray over down load but are we gonna get the choice.
Was Toshibas move out of HD DVD a bloody good decision im starting to think so.
SO what can we do? - not buy any - format dont get enough sales and dies.
continue to buy dvds -sales ratios- format dies
i dont buy any dvds (apart from some tv boxsets)any more as i would only consider spending my dosh on blu but with prices being what they are i dont buy many. loss of sales all around.

Re: BluRay prices(greedy gits)

Toshibas move out of HD DVD was the reason.... there is no competition in the HD arena now so what reason do any of them have to reduce prices, if you want HD you either download and get lesser quality of buy Blu Ray.

They're in competition with themselves, if you don't buy the Blu Ray, you may buy the DVD and seen as the DVD is cheaper to make etc they're probably making a reasonable profit margin on that anyway.

Re: BluRay prices(greedy gits)

The £20 to £30 Uk high street prices are a joke. Buy online and there's not much you can't get for less than £17.

Also think about getting US disks as many of these can be got for about £10 now. Most BD's are not region coded. It's only Fox which region codes all their disks.

Re: BluRay prices(greedy gits)

Just be savvy and buy online, high st prices here are a joke at best. Most new stuff online will cost you 15-17 quid and there are lots of bargains to be had too, i've just bought 3 blurays (Queen@Montreal, ACDC Live at Donnington and Transformers The Movie (1986) all for 29 quid delivered from dvd.co.uk. That would have gotten me one bluray in HMV.

Re: BluRay prices(greedy gits)

As this is primarily a software thread I will move to HD movies

IMO .. you should expect to pay premium prices for a new movie format (DVD's were once £20 each as well)

I would suggest buying your Blu-rays online and maybe catching a few bargains in here

Re: BluRay prices(greedy gits)

online all the way. You will unlikely pay any more than £18 for the new top titles, and significantly less for older ones.

Buying High Street is just plain stupidity IMHO

Re: BluRay prices(greedy gits)

The current prices of some releases are a joke. Take Crimson tide for example it was about £13 now it is £25.93 on thehut.

The same 2 for xx deals keep popping up for the same films (e.g. SWAT and Casino Royale). There needs to be some new real deals before I splash out on any more

High Street prices need to come down for this to be a success though, that's the problem. It won't go anywhere until it does.

Perhaps you should write to all the major high street Blu-Ray stockists FAO Head of Customer Services?

Send the same letter template to each and explain why you never buy from their expensive high street shops but always on line, listing a few comparable prices, titles that are £17 online but £26 in store for example.

You won't be telling them anything they don't know already, but at least they will have to acknowledge it.

Re: BluRay prices(greedy gits)

Prices in the high street shops are a joke. I always buy online they're so much cheaper.

Having said that, keep your eyes peeled there are bargains to be had too. I managed to pick up the national treasure 1 & 2 box set for a steal in HMV. Cheaper than play & amazon.

Check out tesco & asda too. Some good deals in store.

This is a new format as more and more product becomes available prices on the high street will come down as someone said earlier if you were there in the early days of DVD you wouldv'e seen the same thing.

Buy online and you will get decent prices.

Saying that I was in HMV last weekend and they had i robot for under 16 quid!

HMV are getting better.

Having said that I saw they wanted 30 notes for the simpsons. Laughable.

Re: BluRay prices(greedy gits)

my concern is if they really wanted blu to be mass appeal they could do a lot more to encourage it. i want the format to last /replace dvd. I brought a ps3 on release day just for blu ray and am dissapointed in the trickle of discs , really feel that if they dont get a finger out other formats will sidestep the whole issue and blu will be the in the same place as laserdisc went. i know more people that download hd content then buy blu

Re: BluRay prices(greedy gits)

so the real question is what can we do to get the powers that be to support the format and push it more, equal pricing to dvds would be a start !
