Blu-Ray Region Identification

I have recently purchased The Golden Compass Blu_ray for my kids on a recent trip to the States. Before I decided to purchase it I checked to see if it was region coded. I could not find any indications on the disc case to tell me that it was . Upon my return to the UK I was dissapointed to find that indeed it would not play on my UK PS3. I can still not find any region coding notice on the disc or case.WHY DO THEY NOT MAKE THIS CLEAR???

Re: Blu-Ray Region Identification

Discs bought in the US are not technically for sale outside the US and hence are RA or R Free by default, no need to advertise the fact as it's pretty much irrelevant to 99.9% of the US market and of course why educate your market to alternate sources?

I use this website when I need to know a region code.

Just checked a few of my discs and most have some graphic be it a simple A, or ABC and bizarrely Stargate has the old DVD R1 logo

Re: Blu-Ray Region Identification

Golden Compass is a New Line release and there seems to be a hack to access their films' menu (thereby allowing playback) despite Reg A coding:
Insert the disc,
message: "region incombatibility" comes up,
press the triangle on the controller or remote,
which should bring up the pop-up menu,
if then click on/select "top menu" on remote/controller
access to film should be accessable...
others say you could just press the square button instead.
-> haven't had a chance to try either, just give it a try me thinks.

Re: Blu-Ray Region Identification

Square did it for me!!!
Thanks Mics49
I believe that we are in a global market and that we should be able to buy where we want and use our goods where we want.Failing that, a clear indicator on the packaging would help!! ......Ill get of my soapbox now.

Re: Blu-Ray Region Identification

Neat, is this just for new line? Is it possible to make the PS3 multiregion for either blu, DVD or both? Any dvd region x or equivalent?

Re: Blu-Ray Region Identification

No... calm down mate..

It's some Newline titles on BR only.... Not other BR's or DVD's

There is no multi region hack for the PS3 and if there ever was, going of past history then Sony would simply disable it with the next firmware update that would be required to play the most recent BR releases... Welcome to the world of BR!

Unfortunately..

Re: Blu-Ray Region Identification

Cheers B M, just curious. Shame you can't get dvd region x or similar. Can't believe we don't have multiregion BD players readily available yet (I know some companies offer modded ones). I had a multiregion dvd player as soon as DVD was out there in the UK, about 9 years ago.

There are of course some BR releases both US ones and UK ones that are region free, but you have to check. Certain studios such as Fox are always region coded, where as WB arn't.

BR players are unlikely to ever get multiregion hacks because of the ability to then simply re-enforce the region coding with what are essential updates. Having said that, we have barely got any BR players which are complete anyway.. the PS3 being the only Profile 2.0 player currently available in the UK AFAIK... so region hacked players if by some chance they do become widespread, won't do until we've got plenty of final profile 2.0 players avaliable. IMHO

There are BR and HD-DVD players however that can be made region free for SD-DVD
