Question I pity you Brits

As per imdb.com more than 50% of the top profile Hollywood actors, producers and the directors are from the U.K. But when it comes to releasing of their movies in their motherland on Home Video you guys are robbed off many extras and ripped off on the pricing. When will this trend change ?

Yeah, don't we know it. lol

I import my movies most of the time, works out cheaper and the versions are usually better in some way such as being Unrated and actually longer.

I doubt it will change anytime soon neither.

Shockingly, with Blu-Ray being the new format, you go into most shops on the high street and the selection is minimal and prices are rediculous. They are selling titles like Superman for £25 each when you can get the same online for £15 or less.

Because it is the same with everything here, petrol, car tax, TV tax even recently the price of simple things like bread.

This country prides itself in ripping off it's own people.

Re: I pity you Brits

We're not ripped off on the pricing so long as you know where to look. I always buy online from play.com, dvd.co.uk etc etc. I picked up Casino Royale on BD for £9.95 online, where as Asda was selling for double that. Agreed, the local stores are rip-offs, with average prices by me of £20+. However, look at DVD's now, with lots of shops having great budget DVD's for £3-£5. Give it time and Blu-ray will hopefully end up the same way. Then it definitely will be cheaper to buy UK disks instead of importing US ones. There's just the extras to work on then.

Sorted thanks. Got a refund from Amazon and got the right film from play.com. Link HERE to that thread. That's the only downside to ordering online- what happens if it's a scratched disk (or even the wrong film in my case above)? This is one advantage local stores have over online stores. But with the prices the way they are atm online's the only sensible way to go.

Re: I pity you Brits

What annoys me is companies like FOX who release Blu-ray films region coded AND then dont release them in the UK. Cast Away being an example. So they lose out on a sale!

.. and don't forget that Australia is the same Blu Ray region as the UK. Even shipping BD DVDs from there half way around the planet to the UK can be cheaper than buying them locally here. What a crazy world we live in..

try dvdcrave I was put on to them by the hddvd fire sale, sites not flash, but service is very good

delivery within a week

and enqs answered quickly

I along with many other people have had problems with other aussie suppliers such as ezydvd.

Once digested some of my hd dvd will be most likely
use them again.

As for future releases like most retailors they do show future releases.

As for region coding not all BD are. warner don't
but fox /MGM and Liongate (which is an Warner company) do.

Try the hd films section at the top of this forum for the region free list.

Will miss hddvd no region coding was a big plus for me, Crank and Rescue Dawn are US only BD with no uk launch but picked both up on hd dvd , one from a german company and the other Dutch
(the wonders of the internet).

Try here: www.releaselists.com/BLURAYAustralia.html

I've had decent experiences buying from DVD Crave, would would not recommend EzyDVD - they're in chaos.

Hope this helps.

Pretty good price I'd say.

Aye. Imagine living in America and having to check your bank balance/medical insurance before calling an ambulance.

UK wages are higher than in the US, and we don't have several thousand deaths and injuries from guns every year.

And we can always import!

Pretty good price I'd say.

Unfortunately DVD.co.uk won't sent the Spider-Man Trilogy to Ireland.

However they will send single BD's.

I settled for the box set from Asda for £23.

Yes, I think to anybody interested in HD media, the internet is not only advantageous, it is a necessity with todays prices. Had a look in a local store today, and all the BD's were over £25- some were £30, like 'Shooter'. I don't care what the quality is like, I am not spending £30 on any film. I thought it amusing when I saw Spiderman 3 for £25 and I just spent £18 on the trilogy.

MGM was controlled by Sony but no more. Fox and Comcast, the largest U.S. cable provider, bought enough shares to get controlling intrest. In the first few months of Blu-ray, Sony was distrubuting MGM but now Fox does.

Re: I pity you Brits

The uptake of Blu over here won't really begin until shop prices are competetive.

A high percentage of DVD buyers don't shop online.

My old man for e.g won't shop online, refuses to even have a credit/debit card.

The only choices he has are Zavvi and HMV, both of which charge rediculous amounts for movies like £25 each and some even more. The selection is also very poor, only two small sections in HMV.

Buying him and my bro a PS3 as joint birthday pressie between them soon, and I imagine ill have to order movies online for them.

Re: I pity you Brits

yeah its totally crazy and whats worse in my opinion is that HMV are still selling their HD DVD's at full price and not even a hint of warning about the formats demise instore... apart from the blue ray aisle being 3 times longer..

i only buy titles in HMV if i'm stuck (impulse buys)... GameStop have a fairly good selection at much better prices, and Game have a few titles also..

cant figure out HMV though.. they have some titles.. say A few good men and Flatliners @ 21.99 euro then titles like Speed for 44.99 euro! its crazy really

amazon.co.uk have pretty good delivery time to ireland... 2/3 days

movietyme are a joke altogether.. 3 weeks for delivery!

in relation to region A versus region B.. its not always one way... we got Independence Day a couple of months before it came out in the states..

Re: I pity you Brits

i think some people are just rich enough not to have to worry about spending their lives on the internet looking for blu ray deals

also a lot of people are still cautious about buying online and may be unaware of play.com and amazon

and occasionally, just occasionally places like hmv do have an offer that beats the net.
