'Earth' UK Blu-Ray

Watched about half of this last night (it was late and it was a struggle to turn it off)...in a word 'stunning'. I know its taken footage from the Planet Earth series, but there is a lot of new footage also. Looks amazing on Blu-Ray.

Spoiler: The super slow-mo Cheetah chase was both beautiful and heart-wrenching at the same time. I was amazed by how precise and calm the Cheetah was with the kill and how it's head was completely still while it was running.

Anyone else seen it?

I'm not entirely sure, I think it has about 40% extra/new footage. It's ages since I saw 'Planet Earth' on TV (and I did miss a couple of episodes), There was a lot I hadn't seen before, and the bit with the Polar Bear cubs seemed longer than that shown in 'Planet Earth'. Don't quote me on that though, I could be wrong.

Will watch the rest tomorrow (off out tonight) and can't wait, I was mesmerised.

For anyone interested it's encoded as VC-1 with an average bitrate around 28 to 30 Mbps (I did check that).

Re: 'Earth' UK Blu-Ray

I agree, the sound and PQ on this is awesome and Patrick Stewart does a very good job on the narration.
I got it just a few days ago but then sold it (in the classifieds). I already have Planet Earth and didn't feel that for me at least, there was enough extra footage on this to make it worth watching again.
I think if anyone didn't already have Planet Earth and didn't fancy watching all the footage on PE, then this is a great purchase as it takes most of the good bits from PE and adds some extra bits and presents it extremely well.
I'll reiterate, the PQ and audio is extremely good on this - highly recommended (if you don't already own PE)

Re: 'Earth' UK Blu-Ray

Earth really is great, it was made because it was hoped that with the success of "march of the penguins", which really was quite a poor effort when u look at EVERY LITTLE THING the BBC and david attenborough have done, that people would appreciate a REAL docu-movie.

in japan this is prolly one of the big number 1's, but it never really got a good screening at cinemas over here, however my son did watch it at wolverhampton, with his school. there is roughly 40% new footage in it. i just dont know why march of the penguins did so good, and this hasn't really even hit the media over here or in the US?

Re: 'Earth' UK Blu-Ray

I was HD Supervisor on Earth.

Is the UK disc really Region B only, as I all my players are region A?

Thanks

Thanks, Earth was very tough to conform due to the wide variety of shooting formats.

A lot of credit to how good it looks shoud go to Luke Rainey the grader (colourist) and the fantastic scanning and recording done by Cinesite.

Re: 'Earth' UK Blu-Ray

Just bought Earth today for my son. Absolutely stunning visuals, and a great soundtrack! One question though. On the cover it says 'lossless audio'. I only seem to be playing a Dolby Digital soundtrack...? Is there a lossless sound option hidden anywhere?

Well folks you've convinced me so I ordered it on impulse (along with I Am Legend and The Golden Compass)!
