What is the best encoding method?

Hi folks,

Just curious, which Blu-ray discs are supposed to be better, those encoded using the MPEG-4 AVC method, or the VC-1 method?

Or should there be no difference at all?

Cheers.

Certain people like to argue over which is best but there really is no 'right' answer.

Given enough space, either of these or even Mpeg2 can give excellent results, but the simple fact is that both these newer codecs are roughly twice as efficient as Mpeg2 - that is you can get equivalent results using half the space.

VC1 has rightly or wrongly gotten itself a reputation as a coded capable of giving excellent results with a low bitrate, partly due to it's close association with the HD DVD format.

Being dual format I've seen lots of examples of both codecs and wouldn't rate one higher than the other. The simple fact is given a good source and a good transfer either codec can give stunning results.

Re: What is the best encoding method?

MPEG 2 at 38mb/s
H264 at 28mb/s
VC1 at 24mb/s

For the best PQ, but VC1 at 16mb/s is pretty good,
