First BD Profile 2.0 Discs

Sorry if this has been posted already...

Quote:
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is targeting April 8 as the date it will release its first batch of Blu-ray Disc titles that can be connected to the Internet for more bonus materials and features.

The musical spoof "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" and the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi thriller "The 6th Day" will be the studio's first two BD-Live titles. Their release coincides with the launch of a new software update for Sony's PlayStation 3 that makes the game console the first Blu-ray player with Internet connectivity, an ability known as "Profile 2.0."

Ultimately, all Blu-ray players will be Profile 2.0. When the format launched in June 2006, Blu-ray players were of the basic Profile 1.0 kind, meaning they could offer neither picture-in-picture nor Internet connectivity, something the doomed HD DVD rival format offered from Day 1.

Now, the big push is for Profile 2.0 players, which are slated to start coming to market in the next few months. Accordingly, studios are scrambling to produce final spec BD-Live software as well, with Lionsgate leading the charge in January with "War" and "Saw IV" -- a bold move, considering there weren't yet any players on the market that could tap into the discs' Web-enhanced content.

Sony's two BD-Live titles each include exclusive downloadable theatrical and home video previews along with a FAQ about BD-Live functionality. "Walk Hard" includes three featurettes that star Bill Hader as Derek Stone, a historian and expert "Coxologist." These featurettes are available only via the BD-Live download.

BD-Live titles also have the potential to enable a wide range of Web-based features, including ringtone and wallpaper downloads, peer-to-peer interactions, live virtual events and gaming.

Re: First BD Profile 2.0 Discs

If they keep it up the format will have the same features as HD-DVD had

Still, I understand the PS3 will be able to resume play a Blu-Ray disc even if disc is ejected.

Still one might say they could have done that from day 1?

this the feature on the disc for profile 2.0

MoLog - Short for MovieLog, this feature promises to allow consumers to create and share their own added value content via blog entries.

Had a very quick (2 mins most) play around with this feature on Saw IV earlier, seems you can edit certain scenes of the movie and overlay your own text/animations etc on theme. As I said, only had time for a very quick play with it, certainly a novelty, whether it's much more than that, I don't know until I play with it some more.

According to MovieTyme, the US version of 'Walk Hard' has been confirmed region free so I've just ordered my first Profile 2.0 disc.

Re: First BD Profile 2.0 Discs

is anyone really looking to buy walk hard or the 6th day?

im getting a ps3 to play blu ray discs and while im glad itll be future proof to some extent im not interested at all in these internet extras

and why on earth would you want to edit the film yourself?

unless theyre going to give you extra footage and stuff like that so you could theoretically make your own directors cut, it seems like a gimmick

(and even then how do you edit a movie that has a continuous musical score running through it? if you removed or added a scene the music would jump and have no continuity)

as reasons to buy a profile 2 player theyre not that convincing, as films to tempt you into going for profile 2 theyre not that convincing

release some eagerly awaited disc and then we'll talk.

Re: First BD Profile 2.0 Discs

No matter how good profile 2.0 is I'd never buy either of those films.

I barely have time to watch films let alone editing them, as the previous poster said I think it's a gimmick.

Neither of those films interest me however 2.0 is more than just editing (which is a gimmick) and the idea of downloading features off a website rather than storing them on a disc (which thus leaves more room on the disc to be dedicated to having the best possible pq and aq) is a good idea.

Re: First BD Profile 2.0 Discs

Profile 2.0 / Bonus View / Web-enabled Features etc may offer some good features in the future? HD-DVD was IMO begining to show some interesting possibilities with their features with some titles... I hope they BR do so, as I don't normally bother with SD or HD extras in anyway...

As for the choice of titles, I guess it nothing new to try and flog lemons such as these two films by putting on lots of fancy extras, similar idea to Shrek3 But really... The 6th Day??

I wish I'd never bought it on SD DVD, I'm certainly not going to buy in on HD

IMO: AVOID!!! and demand Quality releases!

Lots of Blu-ray titles including new ones are Region Free and our legacy brother SD DVD still carries Region Coding. What a pity.

Re: First BD Profile 2.0 Discs

I got the US region-free version of 'Walk Hard' the other day and the BD 2.0 features are rather pointless really. On the first disc there is an option in the Special Features menu to go 'BD Live'. This then connects you to the internet and eventually presents you with a screen similar to that seen on some HD DVD releases. There are a few trailers you can download and three small featurettes relating to the film. Basically, stuff they could and should have put on the disc anyway. The whole thing works pretty flawlessly though I found download speeds to be on the slow side (I'm using a UK PS3 BTW).

Hopefully, we'll get some worthwhile BD 2.0 content soon to rival that seen on HD DVDs such as 'Transformers'.

Re: First BD Profile 2.0 Discs

I got my UK copy of "The 6th Day" yesterday and watched it last night.

Enjoyed movie, great picture quality and sound.

Can't say I noticed anything really Profile 2.0 about it...

Extras still play in wrong aspect ratio on my PS3

BTW, UK disc box says all regions

The 6th Day

Well I have just reloaded the disc in case I missed anything....

I cannot see any web enabled features but what it does now have under "Scene Selection" is the option to ADD BOOKMARK (Green) DELETE BOOKMARK (Red) and VIEW BOOKMARKS (Yellow).

I wonder where they got that idea from

BTW, See the review of this movie on this very site at http://avplay.avforums.com/index.php?reviewid=13104

One thing the review says it's MPEG my PS3 says AVC. Is AVC the same as MPEG?

Entirely agree - the ability to create a Jar Jar lite version of The Phantom Menance would be a very worthwhile thing IMHO

Personally I think alot of what we will see from BD Live (Profile 2.0) in the short term will be rubbish - we'll see tacky extras and marketing. However there are some interesting possibilities for BD Live both for extras and managed copy - so I for one am very glad the discs are here. Hopefully high end players will follow...

Re: First BD Profile 2.0 Discs

The only extras I find interesting (or watch more than once) are the warts-and-all style making ofs (like the recent Blade Runner or Baron Munchausen). I don't think these can be beaten by PIP or web enabled stuff.

BTW, I like the 6th Day too
