The May 2008 issue of AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER magazine has an extremely detailed four page article on the new restoration by Robert A. Harris of THE GODFATHER TRILOGY.
The article with frame grabs will soon be online at
<theasc.com/magazine>
Some highlights;
-- DVD release in September ALAS no word on Blu Ray yet
-- Total 4K scan, color correction, dust busting, scratch removal
-- Restoration was totally digital as film elements were too damaged.
-- A wide range of source elements were used;
original negative, inter pos, dupe negative, YCM separation masters.
Sufficit to say this is VERY exciting. . . three great films
FINALLY looking better than they ever have on home video.
Enjoy.
A caveat to the NEW PQ TIER ZERO FANS and GRAIN HATERS;
To paraphrase a series of recent online BR film reviews:
"You may find yourself underwhelmed at first as there isn't much eye candy to be had here"
This restoration is NOT going to look like the "eye popping
3D colourful jump off the screen 'oh-look-you-can-see-the- threads-on-his-jacket" discs that seem to be considered the Gold Standard for how films are to look on Blu Ray
When the GODFATHER discs come out please don't complain that is doesn't look like BLACK SNAKE MOAN or CRANK or LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD [ all films I have and enjoy by the way ] . . .
This is THE GODFATHER TRILOGY and it wants to look like THE GODFATHER TRILOGY
A quote from cinematographer Gordon Willis in the article sums it up:
"When people see things they don't understand they become frightened, and the concept of what THE GODFATHER is -- or was -- still eludes some people."
"We all tend to reduce or expand things to a level we can understand . . . . and it can be fatal to a film like THE GODFATHER if what someone understands is PETTICOAT JUNCTION."
"The goal here was to restore not to remake."
The film has already been made." . . . . "they have not tried to dial anything into the film that wasn't there before."

The restoration efects are dramatic. The beautifully restored Godfather trilogy
will be re-released in September, prompting, no doubt, hundreds of thousands
of DVD sales and, hopefully, Blu-ray disk sales as well.
