whats the score with older films being put on HD? ie all these 80's/90's films

i thought films had to be filmed in HD, no?

are they true HD quality like the newer films or just been put on HD disks?

i dont want to go out n buy all the oldie again to find they're them same quality as my SD ones

Re: older films on HD

Films are generally filmed on film, not tape.

As long as they have gone back to the film and re telecine'd to HD then they will be HD.

regards

Brian

I managed to catah 'The Golden Child' and 'Witches of Eastwick on' SKY HD in the last few weeks and they looked like new movies! Great PQ, heres hoping they make it to disc.....

Mind u... holding out for The Lost Boys on blu-ray whenever that appears!

Film has a much higher native resolution than HD anyway, so films made in the 80's, even in the 70's and 60's, will still need to be downscaled to what we define as HD today.

Re: older films on HD

There's a general misconception that new films are made in HD and old films were inferior, made in some form of low grade standard def. The truth is Hi Def is attempting to give as close to film like quality in the home. Film is Hi Def.

All the best

Re: older films on HD

Get with the programme man!

Check out Queen Rock Montreal Blu Ray or HD DVD filmed in 1981 on 35mm (reference quality). Wait for anything by Lucas/Spielberg. Already Close Encounters which looked brill from 1977!!

35mm film is what movies are generally filmed on, even today with the likes of Panaflex and Arriflex.

Film as a medium is still I believe the better option for producing HD Movies. It is very expensive to use film so technology I believe is fastly catching up so that a HD Digital Camera from the likes of Arriflex in development may soon be on par with 'FILM'.

Wouldn't it be fascinating to see war footage esp. early colour footage of Hitler, restored, teleclined or whatever and put onto a HD Disc like Blu or HD DVD. I'm fascinated how good footage of him and Eva Braun in an Alpine setting looks on Sky which is downscaled and could do with an overhaul and this type of footage I believe hails back to the mid 30's when everyone else was tinkering still with B&W.

Yeah I was gonna mention the Robin Hood one only I wasn't exactly sure of the year or if it was Errol Flynn. However you've confirmed that and further conveyed a point.

Cheers!!

Re: older films on HD

i agree , i watched 2001 last night on my new optoma hd 65 on an 8ft screen it was fantastic transfer , just like it had been made yesterday ,not 1968. then i put bram stokers dracula bd on and that was one of the worse transfers i had seen , and that film was made in 1992 , so it proves its not the years its the transfer.
