Do you watch the extras?

Ive got about 30 bluray movies at home and to be honest I havent watched a single extra on even one of them. I usually just watch a film and turn it off. When do you watch the extras? Before a film, after or neither?

Re: Do you watch the extras?

Usually after I've seen the film, that could of course mean I've already seen it at the cinema, so in that case they're usually the first thing I watch

Re: Do you watch the extras?

I always watch them after I have watched the movie. Some of them I turn off quickly though when I clearly see they are just publicity material and loads of clips of the actors kissing each other's backsides, e.g. "he was so great to work with!", etc, etc.

I really enjoy the commentaries on lots of movies as well. It's quite hard to sit through the whole movie in one go listening to it though as I often end up wanting to watch the movie again!

Re: Do you watch the extras?

Hardly ever, unless there are out-takes (usually on a comedy).

I watched the directers comentry on the end of the last lost series DVD box set, and that was only to find out info on the next series. That was a rare moment I can remember to date.

That's it. I guess I'm probably missing out on some stuff, but it's the movie that I want to watch really.
I don't buy special editions, and tin boxsets either... the only exception to the rule is when directors cut SEditions are released because there is more movie content.
But then I am not really a movie collector, I'd rather rent the film and buy if it's really worth watching again

Re: Do you watch the extras?

In all of my time i can remember watching extras on about 4/5 discs both HD and DVD.

The extras on gladiator were excellent, nothing to do with the movie the history program about the life of gladiators was great.

I remember watching the follow the white rabbit extras on the matrix back in 1998 just to see what it was like, and all that bullet time stuff was interesting.

I also remember watching some of the starwars and LOTR extras on various films.

One of the best movie related extras was the 2nd disc of the US Blade runner release (dangerous days). I found it really interesting.

But on 99% of films i watch i'd not even glance at the extras. I've tried a little more recently such as the startrek TOS discs, and BSG discs, but i can't say i've really got into them.

Try the commentary track on 'The Thing'. Well worth listening to John Capenter and Kurt Russell getting increasingly tipsy. You can here glasses clinking and zippo lighters being opened regularly

Re: Do you watch the extras?

Sometimes I will watch the extras but I don't watch even close to all the extras on every disk. I like to see stuff like gag reels (maybe its just me but gag reels seem to be getting less and less funny) and alternate endings.

The occasional documentary is also good, I find I am more likely to watch them on a BluRay because of the integration of the pop up menu, I usually click to show the pop up menu and have a look through what extras are available when the end credits roll, the Bond Girls are Forever doc on the Casino Royale disk was fairly interesting as was the one about the Spartan society and the accuracy of the film on the 300 disk.

Commentary's aint for me though, even if they are PiP.

I never bother to watch any extras at all. All I am interested in is the movie.

Not yet watched any extras from my Blu-ray or HD DVD collection. Last extras I watched were from LOTR EE's. Ill probably watch them again if it's ever released on Blu-ray.

Re: Do you watch the extras?

Depends on the film and what they are.

I'd watch the extras on Jaws but not Jaws 3.

I'd watch if they were technical informative stuff but not if it's Hollywood actors back slapping one another about how lucky they were to be on the film.

Some are really good. A few standouts recently were on the Battle Of Britian DVD which went on about the problems of getting all the planes together for filming and how it was done. I also listened to the Directors Commentary for Disturbia as I liked the film.

If you never bother with extras and just watch the film have you thought about renting instead? You could rent the film a couple of times for less than buying.

Re: Do you watch the extras?

Mainly on old classics.

For example, I love the in-depth, quality extras on the Powell & Pressburger films, Leone westerns, etc.

Ditto the commentaries on these.

But I don't like the standard extras you get on new films.

I hate commentaries that just tell us how cold it was on this day of filming, or whatever.

I hate 'how we did the cgi' documentaries - same every time. First we see someone being filmed with a load of dots on them. Then the wire skeleton. Them we see the animation in blocky form. Then more detail. The we add the shade. AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

I do wonder if it was better in the old days, when you didn't know how they did it...

I wonder if people were disappointed when they found out the skeletons in jason and the arganaughts were made of plasticine

Re: Do you watch the extras?

Only after I've seen a movie. I do tend to go through and watch them though. I can't really think of a film where I've neglected them. They certainly add value to the title and there's usualy some nice stuff in there. I do love out takes the best, although they tend to be not well represented enough sadly.

I never bother with commentary though. Having to sit through the film listening to directors and whatnot isn't that enjoyable for me.

I always used to forget to return the movies on time and ended up paying as much as £35 for a vhs movie hire. In the end I thought it would be better to buy than to rent. I also like to collect movies and have them on display on a shelf. If there are two versions available too buy one with extras and one without, I always go for the one with extras. I just don't like to think I am missing out. Stupid I know but true.

BTW The only extras I have ever watched was some of the LOTRs and The Aliens boxset.

They had those actual skeletons at the Bradford TV & Film Museum. I loved the film as a kid, it was wonderful to actually see themin the flesh...erm, bones.

It's funny, but we are all fascinated with older things.

A documentary telling you what Orson Welles had for breakfest just sounds more interesting than one telling you what Michael Bay has for breakfast, even though it might be the same thing.

One of the best sets of extras is on the BFI SD DVD release of The Innocents. Virtually every second of every extra is wonderful.

I dont understand what you mean? Before I buy a bluray I ask myself, will I watch this many times? If the answer is yes then I will buy it, if no, then I will rent. I dont see where the extras come into it.
For example ive seen the film 300 about 4 or 5 times since its come out on bluray, mostly with friends & family who want to see it. I only have the film a few months and if I was to rent it every time it would have been alot more expensive!
As regards the extras, when ive been watching a film for 2-3 hours I never really bother spending another 30mins to an hour plus watching more about the film. Maby its just me.

Re: Do you watch the extras?

I normally just watch outtakes or other snippets that relate directly to the film and not just actors talking. If its something that gives you more detail and depth into the story then i will happily watch it. I dont normally enjoy the making of bits (except 'Planet Earth').

The only commentary that i really loved was on Fight Club. Although some parts were crap there were some very funny moments in there regarding script changes and fight scenes.

Re: Do you watch the extras?

On the subject of commentaries listen to the one on 'The Sum Of All Fears'. The book was written by Tom Clancy and the bad guys were arabic. For the film it was changed to having Nazis as the bad guys and other cuts were done.

Someone sat down Tom Clancy and the director together to talk about the film. Thing is that Tom Clancy is very knowledgable about the military. I don't think the director is and Tom gruffly picks holes in the film at many points.

While the Americans are looking over a Russian military facility you can hear this, they are talking about a missile being winched up in the background:

CLANCY: "Is that supposed to be a bomb or a torpedo?"
ROBINSON: "It's a bomb. Why?"
CLANCY: "The dimensions are wrong."
ROBINSON: "In that case it's a torpedo."
CLANCY: "OK. The dimensions are still wrong."

Something else made me laugh later when he picks holes in the way a bunch of Russian pilots are sent to blow up an American carrier with no real briefing. They all just grab their gear and run out of the door.

Re: Do you watch the extras?

In 'The Thing' one of the most gruesome bits of the movie is where I guy is dragged across the floor by 'the thing' who has it's fingers forced inside the victim's cheeks. When you watch the commentary Kurt Russell has clearly had too mch too drink and bursts out laughing at this bit! He does it more and more as the commentary goes on. Everytime there is a scary bit he ruins it by bursting out into laugher! It's classic.

I don't mind a commentary, but I find that most extras are completely and utterly useless.

Give me a good picture and soundtrack, I'll be a happy man.

Re: Do you watch the extras?

Yes, I watch all of them, except the trailers (unless its an old film or a different film where I think 'how did they pitch this')

I usually watch them after the film if its just me watching or maybe the day/weekend after if its a long extra like the Jaws making of.

Re: Do you watch the extras?

Rarely watch the extras personally - occasionally I do explore (generally if the film has been exceptional) - but on the whole I don't care. What I do like on a disc is lossless audio, the highest possible picture quality and I'm also a sucker for extended editions/director's cuts.

Re: Do you watch the extras?

Only extras I can remember watching were on Not Another Teen Movie, and only as someone told me to watch them as they were funny. I don't think I could ever watch a commentary, as mentioned above, it would just annoy me and I would probably want to watch the film again after a while anyway

Maybe that will change...*goes to flick through some extras*

Re: Do you watch the extras?

I think the commentary on the Austin Powers stuff was funny as well from what I can remember.

Re: Do you watch the extras?

I enjoy watching some of the documentaries, like "Dangerous Days" on Blade Runner, but i can't stand deleted scenes in general. They are most often deleted for a reason.

I've never been to fussed with commentaries either.

Re: Do you watch the extras?

I will occasionally watch outtakes or listen to commentaries if I think they will be funny, for example I recently watched both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz with the commentary on, I recommend listening to both
