Old Movies on HD / Blu-ray

Is the picture quality on films made years ago and now being put on to HD / Blu -ray "worthy" of HD? Many/all of these older films cannot have been shot with HD cameras. Wouldn't it be better just to buy these films on normal DVD? or am I missing something?

Re: Old Movies on HD / Blu-ray

Get a copy of "The Searchers" from 1956 or "The Adventures Of Robin Hood" from 1939 and see the difference HD makes for yourself....

http://avplay.avforums.com/index.php...diareview=8752 for review of The Searchers....

Re: Old Movies on HD / Blu-ray

A film shot to look good on a massive cinema screen will look good in HD. Previously it would be shot on film and downscaled to fit on a DVD. Now it's still downscaled but not by as much. So any old film will look good. The film itself may have detiorated a bit with age but that can be cleaned up again.

Re: Old Movies on HD / Blu-ray

I might be wrong here, but I understand film can be up to the equivalent of 4000p, so even old movies shot on film will look alot better on HD than SD, in fact some of them are just as impressive as recent releases....

Re: Old Movies on HD / Blu-ray

Film is hi-def. In HD all films should be brilliant and HD presentations should give a much better version of it than the standard DVD. Don't get confused with film and HD video.

All the best

Re: Old Movies on HD / Blu-ray

Thanks for clearing this up for me. I always looked on HD version of old movies with suspicion in terms of quality but now I know. I will look to getting some now
