When will the big titles be released on BD?

I remember shelling out to buy a DVD player when they were new to the market but I had the choice of the Matrix, Alien boxset & loads of others that I couldn't wait to see "DVD Quality" at the time. There were releases worth buying month in/month out.

Now I look at the available Blu-rays and think "meh!", you have Spiderman & Pirates, Black Hawk Down, 300 & Casino Royale but that's more or less it AFAIK.

This is play.coms upcoming releases:

Hey ... Tekkonkinreet, Paprika & Superbad!!! Yay!! Can't wait.

Where is the Matrix Trilogy, LOTR Trilogy, Aliens, Gladiator, The Terminator movies & most of all ... The Star Wars series???

Are we looking at the new Laserdisc here or what?

The Terminator movies are on Blu Ray. Don't know about the others that you mentioned.

T2 and T3 are both on blu-ray now. I think they should be region free: http://www.movietyme.com/catalog/pro...ucts_id=32845&

http://www.movietyme.com/catalog/pro...ducts_id=38405 I think T1 is also out.

Came out on laserdisk and then took years to come out on DVD. Fox again so anything could happen.

The Matrix Trilogy is already available in high def - and a Blu-ray release can't be far off now Profile 2.0 is finally emerging. However the other series you list are AAA titles and we probably won't see for a long time. I think it would be very optimistic to expect Star Wars anything less than 5 years into the life of the format.

And, aside from Alien (which may well get a release sooner rather than later), the rest of that saga will need remastering before it will be released. Given that Fox are handling it I wouldn't hold your breathe - they seem to be re-cycling their DVHS lineup at present.

Gladiator is, of course, a Universal title who remain HD DVD exclusive at present.

For one Laserdisc sported decent titles. For another it took DVD years to acquire a decent catalogue - so to with HD DVD/Blu-ray.

I'm still waiting for Disney to announce The Incredibles and for FOX to announce 24 Day 5 and 6 on Blu Ray.

Re: When will the big titles be released on BD?

I wouldn't expect LOTR to hit BluRay for a while yet, IMO they will most likely hold it back for a bit to release in Xmas 2009 and it will feature the first proper trailer for the Hobbit movie due in 2010, that kinda advertising tie in is just too big to miss out on.

Gladiator is a Universal Studios movie so for the time being it is likely to come out on HD DVD if at all, Does seem odd that such a popular movie has not seen a release yet, I wonder why, maybe Ridley Scott has a deal like Spielberg and wont allow his movies out on HD DVD exclusive (just supposition of course).

Re: When will the big titles be released on BD?

my bet is the matrix will come mid year on blue ray.. blue ray supports IME with profile 1.1 so there shouldnt be any hold up -

with the lord of the rings, i see no reason for New Line to wait past this year with them. If Warner are so enthusiastic for HD as a format on disc to succeed then i think titles like the lord of the rings will have to come sooner rather than later.

in relation to batman begins, i think warner will hold it until the Dark Knight is coming out probably in october/november and release it then in a box set..

or they might release it during the summer when the marketing is in full swing for the dark knight so as to ride the publicity wave.. or even sooner and include some promotional material to get people excited about the dark knight..

when are warner annoucing their release schedule for the year?

I think one of the insiders at BR.com hinted that we might see Batman Begins on Blu-Ray in May.

I think you could apply that argument to a lot of studios. Why hasn't Paramount released the Godfather trilogy yet? Why did Timecop get released at Christmas? Why Norbit? Going through all the studios release lists there has been some bizarre releases. I imagine that the studios maybe prefer to drip drip the releases as otherwise the duff films would never get a look in or something.

With LOTR I imagine there will be a Theatrical release followed by an extended
version twelve months later followed by an ultimate edition with more footage added.

Re: When will the big titles be released on BD?

well i think Warner has planted its flag now so i dont see any reason not to release these titles...

as for Paramount, if i were the HD DVD camp i'd be really annoyed that they havent released some more AA titles in the last 6 months, sure Transformers is amazing but surely they have more titles in the wings that they could release. Simillary with Universal, the cynic in me thinks that they were/are holding off until the picture became clearer in terms of how the format war was going to pan out.. which is why i wouldnt be surprised to see Universal shortly annoucing that it will release on Blue Ray and an annoucement from Paramount in the next six months or so to release in both formats..
