I during this Beginning was good and end was really good, I think the middle may have dragged out a little. Not sure if it was this or if I was tired but I will give it another go in HD goodness

I really enjoyed this, although the people I was with didn't and there was actually a few people in the cinema who walked out

Looking forward to this in HD, even if I don't like Russell !! Denzel's hat and coat combo should look even more stunning

Re: American Gangster

It's now confirmed for February 19th.

Quote:
Also available from the 19th February will be a HD-DVD/DVD Combo release of the film. Both theatrical and unrated cuts will be presented in high definition widescreen, along with a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track. Extras will include a commentary with director Ridley Scott and writer Steven Zaillian, a Picture in Picture function, deleted scenes, an alternate opening, and an Uncovering the Past: The Real Frank Lucas and Richie Roberts featurette.
Looks good though it's a shame the TrueHD track looks to have been dropped.

It's a Sony Pictures film so will be BR only.... release date expected to be Feb 12th, day and date with the Sd DVD. But these will be US release dates and as a Sony title I presume it will be region locked too... can't find anything on UK release...

More details on US release here.. and here..

WoHoo !

What a crazy world we live in

I'm not sure if Uni have just the theatrical rights or the home movie rights too in the UK, but it does appear there's a good chance this may appear some where in the world on HD-DVD at some point..

Not seen the film myself

anyhow.... back to American Gangster.. it'll soon be march

More details from DVDTimes...

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=66770

The more you read, the more disappointing a release it is. No extended cut in HD and just a handful of extras when compared to the 2 and 3 disc edition DVDs.

Will have to look into the differences between cuts, but doubtI will be buying it then. Can they explain the reasoning behind this sort of thing, I am sure it happened on a few occassions now (although can only think of DH4).

Re: American Gangster

With Die Hard they said it was a time issue and that it wouldn't be ready in time, considering this is coming a month earlier than expected, that might be the case here.

Universal are normally good with this sort of thing, in the case of Miami Vice and Knocked Up they put the extended cut on the HD side and the theatrical cut on the SD side, which I always thought was a nice compromise.

Re: American Gangster

The UK release seems to be on 10/3/08, same day as Atonement, Into The Wild and the classic Anchorman, hopefully I will hear more good things from Toshiba et all before then as it may tempt me back into buying the films.

Re: American Gangster

Guys,

Can anyone confirm whether the UK HD DVD version (released 10 March) will be:

1. a combo like US (wouldn't of thought so)?

2. the extended director's cut or the just the theatrical version (like the US HD DVD side of the combo)?

The UK HD DVD disc is on pre-order at amazon UK for £14.99 and the SD 2-disc extended SE for £12.98 - just don't know what version of the film will be on what format.

The 3-disc LE version looks like being another R1-only product (DVD Pacific £14.99 plus delivery).

Help

Re: American Gangster

Just had this reply from Amazon about the HD DVD release:

"Thank you for contacting Amazon.co.uk.

I have heard back from our DVD department with regards to your query about
American Gangster is a single disc (one sided rather than combo) with both theatrical AND extended version on. Thank you for your interest in our range of HD DVDs.

If you have any other questions, please contact us by visiting the e-mail URL below or by using our telephone service"

If this is true, then Happy Days....just bought the HD DVD version - let the yanks have the theatrical cut on their HD DVD combo side.

£12.98 for the SD DVD and only £14.99 for the HD DVD.

Very good price for a blockbuster film... fingers crossed this is the start of cheaper HD DVD's

Re: American Gangster

I'm in a similar boat as you and truth be told, if it was a title available now for £15 for immediate dispatch, I'd probably have second thoughts about ordering it. But it's a pre-order at a good price (which might not stay that low) and if I'm feeling down about HD DVDs prospets come March, I can still cancel it.

Re: American Gangster

Glad I read this thread as I was about to order the US HD DVD. I'll wait the extra few weeks for the UK version now. Can't believe Universal have cocked this up. There was a similar situation with the Miami Vice disk, but they managed to put the extended cut on the HD side.

Why didn't they do the same for this movie?

Nothing for the HD DVD (is you take their supersaver option).

£1.24 for the DVD version - or again nothing if you spend over £15 and get everything delivered at the same time.

Buy the UK HD DVD version and you get both the theatrical version AND the extended version on the same disc.

That way you get to choose...
