Blu-ray and 24pfs

Just wonder how many Blu-ray movies out there actually supports 24pfs? Is 24pfs really that important even if you have a TV is capable to display the 24pfs fully (3:3) or partially (3:2 pulldown 60hz etc).

How can I identify if a Blu-ray movie supports 24 pfs by just looking at the cover without need playing it. I looked at the Casino Royale movie cover but couldn't locate such information.

Please advice.

I was under the impression that all blue ray movies had it and it was up to the player/tv whether you got it or not could be wrong mind

Hi, I'm guessing you mean 24FPS (Frames Per Second)? (Or maybe 24PsF but thats something different altogether).
All Film material is shot at 24 frames per second.
Other than a couple of very rare exceptions, ALL Blu-Ray & HD-DVD discs are encoded at 1080/24p. Its pretty much industry standard now.
-
Its important from some perspectives.
If you have a player that can accurately decode the 24p stream from the disc and send it to a display that can refresh at a multiple of 24 (48, 72, 96 or 120Hz), then yes, you will get a smooth accurate re-production of the film material as it was filmed.
However, if your player can only decode/output at 1080/60i, or your display can only refresh at 50 or 60hz (Common), you will experience 3:2 judder due to the way 24frames are refreshed at 60hz.
It is possible of course to re-construct 24p from a 60i stream providing you have a video processor or display processing to perform the task. Even then, the image still must be refreshed at the correct rate to be of benefit.
-
The question of Importance is a tricky one. If you are not sensitive to 3:2 judder, you wont necessarily see any benefit to its absence.
If you are sensitive to it, you will see smoother images (particularly during panning shots) by utilising it correclty.

The BBC Planet Earth Blu-ray disc set has just arrived and it is clearly stated on the cover that it is 1080i. Not sure if they were authored in 24 fps either.

I read somewhere else (can't find the reference now) that the BBC Planet Earth Blu-ray disc set as released in the USA is full 1080p and to order from there as it's also region free.

If you have a 1080p capable display thet were saying this was the better option.

Indeed. According to the cover, the UK release is encoded at 1080/60i. This is a shame as it takes away the flexibility for those that have the capability to correctly utilise 24p.
Although for those that dont have that capability, with film material there is nothing less 'Full' about the 1080i encode than the 1080p encode, other than 3:2 pulldown. You'll still be seeing a progressive image regardless.
This particular title is a bit of an odd example as the content was filmed at a variety of different resolutions and framerates, so converting everything to one universal stream would always have the potential for some hiccups.
