Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

I was disappointed to read on HD Digest that the Die Hard movies (especially the first two) have got poor video scores Don't know about anyone else, but it was the first two movies that I was looking forward to watching in HiDef

Anyone know when the AVPlay review is being done? I'm hoping a second opinion will throw up something a bit more positive...

Re: Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

I've seen a few screen caps for Die Hard comparing the Blu to the SD and the difference is very obvious. In fact I would say a huge improvement.

Re: Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

Don't know about DH1-3, but I wasn't overly impressed with DH4, IMO the PQ was fantastic at times and poor at others, just not the consistency I'd expect.

The screen captures I've seen of DH 1 and 3 are a big step up in quality on the SD DVD's.

Re: Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

Waiting for my 'quad' set to arrive from dvdworldusa. It's been dispatched so hoping to get it before the end of the week. Will let you know what I think when they come.

I haven't got the SD set so to get the four movies for £50 on bluray is pretty good and the PQ has to be better than SD!

My copy of the Collection arrived today from DVDWorldUSA, was expecting a set like the Spider-man Trilogy but all 4 films are inside a single UK size Blu-Ray case

Not a bad thing, was just suprised.

All 4 movies in a skinny BluRay case? Not impressed if that's the case

The UK Blu-Ray cases arent that skinny though, about double the size of a US Blu-Ray case and all 4 discs fit quite neatly inside...

eeeekkk...yes, this is a surprise!!!

It's the only choice though as only Die Hard 1, 2 and 4 are available as UK releases...no Die Hard 3. So if you want all four movies this is the only way to do it.

By the way, when was yours sent? Mine was dispatched Monday.

Re: Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

For the price that Fox want to charge for this set, they could've at least given us individual cases. It's better than those godawful digipaks though.

Re: Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

I just had a quick skip through DH1 and i'm not that impressed if i'm honest. Yes its better but not THAT much better, comparing scenes against the sd dvd i wasn't blown away. One thing i noticed and its on the sd version aswell is in the titles the text seems to flicker abit , never noticed it before. I was hoping for better, it look quiet soft and grainy to me Haven't looked at DH2 yet but from what i've read its not much better

Re: Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

Well I'm trying to cancel my movietyme order. Not entirely delighted with average reports of PQ and SQ on the first two movies (Fox should surely do better imho), and if I'm paying £60 I expect to see something for my money n: (I know that might sound silly, but I actually like my boxsets like the Spidey trilogy, Matrix etc).

Re: Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

Mine arrived today. I like the packaging actually. It's very robust and the 'hinged' section that holds 2 & 3 actually locks into place when closed...nice This method of putting all the discs into one box cuts down on packaging which is always good. The Spidey trilogy really didn't need three individual cases and a cardboard box.

As I've said before, if you want all four movies on Bluray, and you have a US machine, then this is your cheapest option by far. Buying all four individually on Region A import is gonna cost you £17.99 per movie, thats £71.96. This boxset, at £12.50 per movie (boxset price is £50 then divided by 4 movies) is a good deal. I believe too that all extras that are on individual releases are on the discs in the boxset. I understand that Die Hard 3 isn't available on a UK release so Region A is the only way to get all four movies? This 4-disc set is region A only I believe.

Haven't had a chance to check the PQ yet.

Got a lot of HD viewing this weekend...4 Die Hard movies, Reservoir Dogs Bluray, Flags Of Our Fathers HD-DVD & Letters From Iwo Jima Bluray

Can't believe people are posting more about the case quality than the PQ!

Come on people, is the PQ any good or not!

in a word no soft, grainy & from the few scenes i watched there is quiet a bit of print damage in the same spots as the sd version , not much of an upgrade compared to other catalouge releases. not very happy with it

Re: Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

I've looked at the screengrab comparisons over on AVS, and to be honest if any of the movies look as good as they appear then I'll be a happy man! More than anything else I hanker for that "filmic" look....and many people have commented that's exactly what you get.

Mine's now been despatched by movietyme, so should get it early next week. One thing I do want to do is put the movies in separate cases....anyone know where I can download high res slipcovers for these?

Mine was also dispatched Monday.

To be honest I dont mind having all 4 films in a single case, not got much room as it is and at £12.50 per film compared to £18+ bought seperately the set is a good deal.

The extras are not all there. Some of the best stuff from Die Hard has gone walkies, like the AWESOME scene editing feature. I know that means dick for most folk, but Die Hard is my favourite film of all time EVER and it gives me a buzz seeing all those alternate lines and takes, and being able to edit them together how I want. The DVD also offers a deleted scene, gag reel, superb interactive articles from American Cinematographer & Cinefex and more.

I will be keeping my Die Hard DVD. Hell, I've still got it twice over on laserdisc. I wonder how the DTS LD will compare?

i find if watching through a ps3 and press select check the Mbps reading if it stays above 24 the picture quality is good.only aplies to the sharpness though grain and print spots cant make any difference whatever the reading of course.

From here:

http://www.dvdworldusa.com/shopexd.asp?id=60180

As for the PQ, I watched Die Hard 1 last night. I have to say the PQ isn't fantastic. In fact I'd say it's probably the worst I've seen on a Hi-Def release either Bluray or HD-DVD. Having said that, it isn't terrible. The only way I can describe it is that it's kinda 2/3 Hi-Def...compared to SD. It is a soft image and that's me watching through component on my PS3 with sharpness turned up to full. It probably looks worse over HDMI which tends to be softer anyway. Haven't watched 2-4 yet.

Geoff_D...I was referring to the extras on the individual Bluray releases and that these are the same on the discs in the boxset. It's a shame that companies aren't putting all the extras on HD releases that they put on the SD releases. Worst offender so far for me is Spidey trilogy. 1&2 have NO extras on them yet did feature lots of extras on SD releases.

Just another strange thing with Die Hard...I've got the GioTek Darklite remote for the PS3 and with Die Hard the pause button wont work? It does on other movies

Re: Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

I received my copy of Die Hard 1 today and all I can say is that I'm gald I didn't waste my money on all 4.

It's one of those movies where you try and convice yourself that some scenes look high def and that you havn't just wasted £15.

I think 2/3 high def is generous. I say more like 40% tops.

If you already have Die Hard on DVD and have the PS3 then stick with upscaling it because the difference is marginal at best.

Fox being BD exclusive really means nothing when they bring out half arsed releases like this.

Re: Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

Well I enjoyed DH when I watched the UK release last night - I really thought the PQ was pretty good (nowhere near the best Ihave seen for sure, but still a worthy upgrade imo)

Will watch DH2 later today and see if thats as good/better (I prefer 2 as a film anyway)

Re: Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

couldn't agree more with 7hil, really wish i hadn't bothered. I'm new to blue ray so not had many discs from fox yet , actually these are my first ones. not impressed with the quality so far , other studios like warner seem to make more of an effort with catalouge titles.

Re: Die Hard Quadrilogy - poor pq?

To be fair Die Hard is a relatively low budget, 20 year old film mostly set at night so it was never going to be great.
