Too many films in High Def

I've seen loads of threads complaining about the lack of releases in High DEf. In a recent one at AVS I posted the following reply. I thought it might be useful here, as we do get complaints about releases being a little thin in the ground.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just so you know, before I go any further, I'm dual-format.

I have a 43" plasma in my living room and a HD73 projector in a cinema room.

I find that high def looks 'good' on the plasma, and 'wow' on the projector. So, I generally watch one high def film every week (usually a Friday night) on the projector.

Still with me?

Film I own but haven't watched yet (in high def, that is - I've seen some in SD):

Hot Fuzz
Spider-Man
Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man 3
M:i-2
M:I:III
Big Fish
Bourne 1
Bourne 2
Happy Feet
Kingdom of Heaven
The Polar Express
Mad Max 2

Films on order buy not yet received/released (or pencilled in to buy):

Bourne 3
Harry Potter 5
Blade Runner
Stardust
Eastern Promises
The Kingdom
Pan's Labyrinth
Zodiac
The Brave One
Pixar Shorts
OldBoy
Ratatouille
Die Hard 1
Die Hard 2
Die Hard 3
Die Hard 4
Independence Day
The Simpsons Movie
Sunshine
'Breaker' Morant
Life Of Brian
Godzilla
Memento
Layer Cake

Add to that the following which I'll be buying when we eventually see them, which should be before I see that lot of:

Jack Ryan 1
Jack Ryan 2
Jack Ryan 3
Jack Ryan 4

I make that 41 films.

At one a week that takes me through until Friday the 29th of August next year.

Heaven knows how many great new/catalogue titles will be available by then.

If not, there are still quite a few films I've not got round to ordering yet, but which I could if there was a dry patch.

Casino
Babel
The Untouchables
2001: A Space Odyssey
Full Metal Jacket
The Aviator
Crash
Reservoir Dogs
Apocalypto
28 Weeks Later

In addition there are the upcoming German releases of Death Proof, Planet Terror and T:2.

Oh bloody hell, that takes me through to the 28th of November next year.

Then I have Annie Hall, Groundhog Day and The Host recorded from SKY High Def on my Hard Drive.

Oh dear, I'll have run out of films by Boxing Day 2008.

My problem isn't going to be a lack of films, but too many to watch in the time I have.

Steve W

ps. After all that, I forgot about 300 (see my 'too expensive' thread). That's the rest of this year and all of 2008 dealt with. Let's hope they release something decent for me to watch between now and 2009.

SW

Re: Too many films in High Def

I have to agree with you here steve

And i have the added frustration of having just moved, all my gear in boxs (and kit still being ordered) on the HD Movie front i also watch on average 1 Movie a week (2 or 3 some weeks - Sky HD Stuff also squeezed in) but with nearly 2 new arrivals each week the pile of Celophane wrapped un-watched items is now being bolstered up with Brown Giffy bags of 'Surprises' awaiting to be unleashed..... If there is anyone who can't find a movie to Watch or Buy i will be surprised to say the least.......

Re: Too many films in High Def

Wait till you buy TV boxsets. I want to rewatch Heroes. I watched it all originally on the SciFi channel then I bought the box set. Next I want the BSG S1 as I never watched it first time round.

If you are dual format I estimate there's now something like 600-700 unique film titles with more coming out. There seems to be more extras on these disks than ever before too. I spent one night watching all the Blood Diamond stuff. Very interesting if you care about the message in the film.

Maybe so I don't get a lot of pixel/line structure, or upscaling artefacts? High def isn't all about having so much detail that you can count hairs.

Truth be told, the reviews have been mixed. So I'll probably have bought them anyway, but I'm not in any rush.

If they come out soon-ish on high def and cost only a few quid more than the SD versions, I'll be more than happy.

Replacing old films (or not) with high def versions is one thing. Nut buying pretty much everything that's new on high def is a bit of a no-brainer for me.

Re: Too many films in High Def

Not sure it matters with those two films. They deliberately shot them on poor film stock, and then spent hours damaging and scratching the film to give it that authentic "budget" movie feel of the exploitation flicks.

I have the HD buying bug too, but have to hold back as Christmas is coming... and I've been told I am not allowed to buy anymore until after then

I've been with my patrner for just over 2 years, after years of being a sad single bd.

I played a blinder. I continued buying for the first year or so just as I always had done.

Since going high def this year I've made lots of noise about cutting back, etc. Me Julie is well impressed. I shop around for deals more, and am a little more picky - not a bad bit of self-discipline, actually.

So instead of £20 DVDs being bought whenever I felt like it, I've come back to an everage of onw £14 film per week.

I'm the bee's knees!

Re: Too many films in High Def

I counted up my total spend on HD films this year and the results really scared me - 219 films altogether (counting boxsets as 1 film). Quite stupid really. 2008 will really see me slow down as TBH I've been buying films based on a PQ and SQ basis, disregarding how much I might enjoy the content.

Some films still blow me away, such as 28 Weeks Later which I watched last night and loved, but I need to start picking and choosing rather than replacing my DVD collection.

Some back catalogue films have really stood out such as the Matrix Trilogy and as recently as Close Encounters, but on the whole I think only buying new releases is the way forward for me.

Please don't think I am arrogant saying this BTW. I am just obssessive.

lol

I know what you mean...to many movies are still sitting sealed on the shelf after a year

Some of them, though, I must admit, I'm waiting for when I can watch them with DTS Master Audio (such as the Pianist, fantastic movie but I want the best sound experience!)

Others...well like the MI trilogy....I've only watched MI III, don't know when I'll ever get round to watching the other two

Re: Too many films in High Def

Gentlemen, I think I see a pattern emerging.

I have to admit to being the same. In some ways High Def has come along at the right time for me.

After looking at the number of SD DVDs still in their clear wrapping, I decided I most certainly wasn't going down that route again.

The good news for those of you who've already started to amass a large collection, just think of it like this - you need to start off big then slow down. It's nice to start off with a little library, then build slowly on that.

My Region 1 DVD of Planet Terror has the scratches and film damage all there. They damaged the original film source, as far as I can remember.

Ludicrous!!

There are nowhere near enough movies in HD

Well I get through 3 - 4 HD Films a week from SofaCinema/Lovefilm. I only own 13 HDDVD's. Plenty to watch in my opinion I found since I got my HDDVD player back in June I don't have to worry about HD as much, I just get on and enjoy it. I certainly have been posting less here!

I think you'll find I was making a calculated over-statement.

I didn't think that anyone would take the thread title literally.

Re: Too many films in High Def

I am awaiting delivery of my EP30 tomorrow and my new 50" plasma next week, but the HD buying bug has already hit. Luckily I am holding it off and stopping myself from buying lots. When I get my 7 free DVDs, plus Transformers and Harry Potter5 I will be sorted for a few days.

I have about 1200 DVDs and am looking forward to replacing a lot of them. But there are a lot that would not benefit from HD so wouldnt bother. Mostly older, cheaper films and old TV shows. I mean, while something like star trek would be cool in HD, something like Only Fools and Horses, Fresh Prince etc would be a waste of money.

I reckon I watch about an everage of 5 movies a week. Or about a 24 episode series. But Wii play time (currently Zelda and Mario) can decrease this

I was in the shops over the weekend and looking at DVDs and I felt no excitement at seeing some great priced DVDs. I have come to conclude that after being demoed HD and about to get my player, DVDs are in the past. Old tech. Except TV stuff, as I said.

So roll on HD. More releases = more choice. More choice = more interest. More interest = more sales. More sales = more releases.

Re: Too many films in High Def

I'm quite a fussy bluray purchaser (I generally rent first and then buy the 'keepers'), however I think there had been a lack of top quality films on HD but with releases like Pan's labyrinth, The assassination of Jesse James and No Country for Old Men either out or shortly to be released the tide appears to be changing.
