Tremors HD-DVD

My copy arrived on thursday from dvdworldusa (nice early delivery)

I have to say I am very dissapointed with this release.
Obviously, the detail is much better (clothes and finer details are displayed well) and it looks a little sharper, but that is were it stops.

There are artifacts all over, hairs, dirt, dust, specks - it is rubbish!
(There is plenty of grain present however Im sure this was down to how it was filmed.)
Even worse though is that the picture also has the old 'jump & wobble' effect, which is noticeable in the opening credits - it doesnt happen in every scene but you will know when its there

The only good thing (and more puzzling) is that it does include a TrueHD soundtrack.

It is a real shame that they didnt take the time or effort to remaster this instead of using what looks like the SD DVD master for it.

EDIT

It would appear that I was wrong in my initial opinion of this HD-DVD,

The problems arise in the opening 10 minutes of the film, but after a proper full viewing the rest of the film is actually very good.

I dont know why the start looks crap but the PQ just gets better throughout, with the final 2 thirds looking great!

A worthy edition to any fans collection.

P.s. sorry for my initial rant, I will double check things before I post next time!

Re: Tremors HD-DVD

That's a shame, it's a great little movie and I was going to pre-order it but thought I'd wait for some reviews first.

Sounds like they dropped the ball with this one. May still pick it up down the line if I can find it cheap as it's surely got to be some improvement over my old DVD release.

Re: Tremors HD-DVD

Regarding your initial reactions, these were reminiscent of mine when I watched the opening credits of the 'Deliverance' HD DVD. The picture was incredibly soft and full of grain. However, when it switched to the film proper everything improved dramatically.

My 'Tremors' HD DVD was dispatched from Movietyme last week so hopefully I'll have it very soon. I haven't seen the film in years so I'm looking forward to watching it.

Re: Tremors HD-DVD

The credits on older movies were created optically, and the drop in quality that this usually engenders is very noticeable on DVD, let alone HD.

Great to hear that Tremors holds up.

Yeah it was pretty atrocious. Weird happenings like image quality going dire for a couple of seconds etc.
