Lord of the Rings on HD/BD??

Does anyone on here know if/when the trilogy will appear in high def? If so........ will it be a HD or BD disc? It may be one of the key factors in me deciding which format to jump on board with.

Re: Lord of the Rings on HD/BD??

The only Wingnut film out on HD at the moment, is on HD-DVD (King Kong)... but I believe Lord Of The Rings is being released on both formats through Warner.

Announced at the Warner press conference:

Re: Lord of the Rings on HD/BD??

Hope it is HD (or both) as until I realised it was not released I was leaning to HD with it having more of the films I want.

Cheers for the info guys.

Re: Lord of the Rings on HD/BD??

Lord of the Rings is New Line who are currently format neutral.

The only imbalance with their releases is for new films. On these occasions, the BD is regionally coded and the release is staggered, whilst the HD DVD release, being region free, is held back until they are ready to release in all terretories.

Suffice to say, this won't affect a catalogue title like Lord of the Rings.

BTW, the one bit of good news is that New Line are 'in the salad' with the bank at the moment, and subsequently in need of a few bob.

Hopefully this will result in a dual-format high def release sooner rather than later. Even though it's not new, surely it'd break all records and sell hundreds of thousands across the red and blue platforms, if not more.

It probably wouldn't pay off the overdraft, but it could make a reasonable dent in it.

Comparing those pictures it seems like is only a buyer if you haven't got the trilogy already

Re: Lord of the Rings on HD/BD??

The actual HD-DVD transfers will be much higher quality than those images.

Re: Lord of the Rings on HD/BD??

Yeah, those images are downsampled. If you click them, you get larger versions and the difference is really pronounced.

I am sure if the HD transfer is as good as King Kong's, it's going to look glorious.

Can't wait. I'm going to put the HD versions into my DVD figurine versions

That link has been posted before.

It makes me smile as any image (let alone HD) will be compressed and will not look anything like the original image when viewed on your computer screen.

Re: Lord of the Rings on HD/BD??

I think those pictures just show how good SD could be if it wasn't for compression. After all both are displayed at a very SD quality and there are a huge difference.

Re: Lord of the Rings on HD/BD??

Will they be the extended versions or the theatrical? I'm not double-dipping on these again.

Well, that's what I say now, anyway

Jackson has said they are working on an a new HD box set with lots of new docs.I would assume this would be for an extended edition box set.

That's what i am hoping anyway.

I can't be doing with them releasing the theatrical editions then waiting another year or whatever for the extended editions.

Agreed. Given that most of the HD early adopters (like us) probably all own the extended editions on dvd, they would be making a huge mistake by releasing the theatrical versions earlier on HD.
As much as I adore the films , I double dipped before and certainly would not buy anything other than the extended versions on HD. No way, and I feel that alot of people will feel the same. Suppose we shouldn't take it for granted that they will do this, but it would be a PR disaster for the formats if true.

Jackson is not a Lucas either.

He seems to understand the fans and the HD enthusiasts.

Just how much influence he has over the releases is another matter.

I could also do with the extended box set of King Kong HD.
