Is there any difference between the USA & Canadian versions of Star Trek on HD-DVD? like french on the covers, etc?

There could be but any particular reason you are getting an import instead of the UK release?

Re: Star Trek HD-DVD

it's cheaper in the UK once you factor delivery, VAT and duty. I paid around £76.

I don't know what you pay as extra, but in the unlucky case that I have to pay for duties etc. it adds only 25%. www.play.com is much more expensive with HD/BD nowadays. Do you have a much cheaper site to buy from?

The UK one can be had for about £85 (The Hut) before using any coupons or discounts available (The Hut often have 10% discounts).

Cheapest US import is Amazon at about £68 delivered, if your were you be hit for customs on that you would have 22% Duty/VAT + £8 Royal Mail handling which works out to about £23 making it over £90.

Nice prices! Pitty it appears to be a UK-only site.

Bit expensive for me, but they have put a fantastic ammount of work into it and it looks like it will be great.

Re: Star Trek HD-DVD

I think you guys are in for treat, although due to a severe lack of beer tokens, I’ll have to wait before getting this.

I went with some friends to see the re-mastered version of The Menagerie at my local cinema:

Quote:
“STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES” EPISODE “THE MENAGERIE” PRESENTED
ON THE BIG SCREEN IN HIGH DEFINITION AT ODEON

Two Digitally Remastered Episodes Along With Never-Before-Seen Footage and Behind-the-Scenes Featurette

on Tuesday 13th November at 7:30PM

'Star Trek' fans can now boldly go where no man has gone before to see two of the most famous episodes of the original television series at your local ODEON Cinema. 'Star Trek: The Original Series' is being beamed onto the big screen in a special one night event in select ODEON Cinemas on Tuesday November 13th at 7.30pm featuring original Season 1 episodes 'The Menagerie' Part 1 and 2, digitally remastered in High-Definition and Cinema Surround Sound.

Fans will also be greeted by an introduction from creator Gene Roddenberry’s son, Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry*, and given a behind-the-scenes look at how the episodes were digitally re-mastered from the original negatives – including the reinvention of the old TV show special effects using new CGI animation, and the orchestral re-recording of the show’s theme music – in a new 30-minute exclusive featurette.

http://www.odeon.co.uk/fanatic/film_...The_Menagerie/

The intro by Eugene Roddenberry was interesting, and the previews of the forthcoming re-mastered episodes looked awesome.

There were several mentions of the fact that it was a HD-DVD combo and could be enjoyed on normal DVD players or HD-DVD players to enjoy the Hi-Definition experience if full.

It was an excellent demonstration of the quality of Hi-Definition for those that do not already know.

Enjoy your Star Trek box set, and post some reviews please!

Re: Star Trek HD-DVD

I was going to post about this when I first heard about the US cinema showings.

What a great idea!

I mean the big question is, will the Trekkies shell out muchos $$$s (again) for this? Will they understand that the HD DVDversion is a combo and will play even without a HD DVD player?

Well, any die-hard Trekkie worth his salt, even if unhappy about buying the boxed-set, will be very happy to go to see their favourite TV show at the cinema.

Once there, I'm sure many will have been blown away, having seen the episode looking better than they've ever seen it before.

And if it's been constantly stressed that it will play in a normal DVD player, that'll help.

And, of course, I'm sure there are plenty of ST online forums wherethis will be underlined for those who couldn't make it to the cinema.

What an excellent promotional idea!

I'm doing my best to pretend these don't exist, not sure how long I'll be able to hold out though

I daren't even think about working out how much I've spent on various incarnations of these, right from the 2 eps per tape VHS, to the 2 eps per disc DVDs and then the remastered box sets and now they bring these out

Wanted to know the difference between USA & Canada version as Movietyme do the USA version for £99.99 and PlayUSA do the Canda version for £75.99. So wanted to know if the Canada version is missing any extras or has French on the covers.

Anyone brought the Canada version?

Dont forget that with PlayUSA you will most likely have to pay customs so looking at the same price as the US one from Movietyme, probaley a better idea to go for either the UK release which can be had for around £76 or the US release from Axel Music which is about £83

Re: Star Trek HD-DVD

My UK Region 2 HD-DVD set arrived today.

Have to say I was disappointed at the hairs and grit on the beginning scenes of the first episode. If they can give us the "perfect" edition of "2001" with not a spot to be seen then given all the hoopla and stories of expenses incurred to encourage us all to double-dip on this "Star Trek" reissue why haven't they done what they managed to do with "2001"? I know these are old episodes but if they can clean up other films why not this one?

Admittedly once we'd got a few minutes in things had improved dramatically and the title sequence was very clean, but some of the shots are so soft I can't help wondering why they bothered. Hopefully spending more time on the whole disc set will improve my perception.

Am I being dense here or is it really that impossible to remove these things?

It's not impossible it's just that a restoration takes a huge investment and a long long time to do and well something like 2001 may have been considered worth the effort while a TV show whose negative was probably not perfect to begin with let alone stored in pristine condition may just had a quick clean up and a new master created.

some horrid dirt on The Menagerie Part 2 during Pike's first fight.

problems with the EP30 as well playing the start of this episode...

Doctor Who is somewhat different - it has a team of uber fans who devote their spare time to cleaning up the episodes and preparing special features. They get paid for a fraction of the time they invest and effectively just do it because they have an interest in the show. In no way is the work they do commercial viable.

As for Star Trek I think the episodes are very good. A bit of grain on some episodes but on the whole it's very good. The new effects are excellent as well - superbly blended into the original series.

Suggesting that pre-orders of Season 1 are 'substantial'.

Very glad to hear the news about Season 2 here; I have been enjoying the quality of Season 1 and agree with the comments that it's a quality presentation. The must-have high def package for me to date.
