Amazons new BOGOF Blu-ray offer

In order to keep momentum rolling, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Buena Vista Home Entertainment have teamed up with Amazon for yet another Buy One Get One Free (BOGO) sale. If you missed out on the last big sale, now is your chance to purchase those titles you might have missed when they were first released. There's a total selection of 112 titles to choose from.

Cheers - just had a look and they have a 'select' list of films from which to choose - some decent stuff on there, some not so decent. They work out to about £12 each (before shipping) so the BOGOF offer is pretty good - may look at Apocolypto and Bridge To Terbithia (neither of which I can spell!!)

Re: Amazons new BOGOF Blu-ray offer

If you buy lots of movies in 1 order, import duties are likely. You need to spread the order to 1 or 2 discs per order so that you stay below the £18 limit. You pay more for shipping though.

Re: Amazons new BOGOF Blu-ray offer

I ordered Memento and Layer Cake. It cost me £15, so even if I get hit for customs, that's not a bad price for 2 films.

The biggest pain was that I looked through the lists first and made a shopping list, then checked the RC situation. I ended up with 2 films instead of 4.

Nonetheless, a good move BD, I think. It worked for them last time (Transformers week). I bought 2 films which I already have and like, but which I wouldn't have bought at full price. In short, it worked.

The people at Paramount and Universal should take note - this is £15 that a HD DVD fan has just spent on 'the opposition', and the missus insist we don't have bottomless pockets.

Re: Amazons new BOGOF Blu-ray offer

Loads of people got hit by customs with the last BOGOF deal from Amazon.com

Reason being is that Amazon put the full value on the packaging and not the price paid. Charge was around £13

A £13 customs charge negates the value of the BOGOF! plus, just checked and Rocky Balboa says "region unknown" - that made me chuckle.

Re: Amazons new BOGOF Blu-ray offer

I was one of the folks who got hammered by customs thanks to Amazon putting the full value of both films on the customs declaration. It appears that some people managed to get away with it and some people didn't..sadly I didn't and got hit with a bill for £12.94 (£8 Royal Mail handling, £4.94 VAT)...bringing the cost of the two discs to just short of £29.

Unfortunately it should quite easily stop you from getting hit by customs as 2 films in the offer comes under the £18 limit.

But a few people seem to have missed other people's comments, particularly Jim Morrison's.

Amazon put the full price on the declaration, NOT the BOGOF discounted price.

Greg,

I'm not sure of the protocol of cross linking posts or including links in posts so, in view of the sheer amount of trouble and confusion this offer has caused, here after is a copy and paste of one of my posts from Another Place. If I were going to take up this latest offer I would contact their customer services from within my Amazon.com account and ask for Amazons assurance that they would state the true COST -below £18 of course - on the customs declaration.

" Amazon,
>
> You say " When we display the cost summary on the customs form on
the
> international packages, we display the actual cost of all the
items
> contained in the package along with their associated shipping
cost."
>
> In this instance you did NOT display the actual cost of the goods
which was the amount that I had actually paid and not the the cost
before deductions made before that payment - the actual cost of the
goods to Me ... and THAT is not just my interpretation but also that
of UK custom and excise: it is the amount that I paid which
establishes the cost of the goods and therefore the amount of
customs duty that might be payable. I suspect that other customers
of yours in the UK are at the receiving end of your strange notion
of cost. If your interpretation was correct then you could just as
easily state that the actual cost of the goods that were bought for
below the customs threshold was, say, $1,000,000 and then proceed to
put that on the customs declaration whilst charging me much less.
Clearly your interpretation of the cost of the order is non-sense
and self serving non-sense at that since I am aware that I am not
the only UK customer who has been placed in this position by
Amazon.com. through taking up your offer. The proper thing to do
would be to admit your organizations mistake and then to make
restitution thereby preserving your companies reputation for fair
dealing.
>
> I have dealt with your company for years and have never
encountered such appalling treatment! I hope that this matter can be
resolved amicably but my confidence in Amazon has been severely
damaged by this incident.

And here is their responce....

" Thanks for writing to Amazon.com with your concerns.
First, please allow me to extend my most sincere apologies for any
frustration this matter has caused. I would like to assure you that
I have reviewed all of the previous contacts regarding this matter
and I see that our prior communications have not appropriately
addressed your concerns.

I have therefore, requested a refund of $27.33 or £12.97 for custom
charges that you have paid to the payment method you used for your
original purchase for order #002-2955607-692666. This refund should
go through within 2 to 3 business days. You should see it as a
credit on your next statement.

You can also view completed refunds by clicking the "Your Account"
link at the top of our web site, then clicking "Go!" next to "open
and recently shipped orders." Completed refunds are displayed at the
bottom of an individual order's summary page.

I hope that this solution is satisfactory. Please know that we value
your business and thanks for shopping at Amazon.com.

Please let us know if this e-mail resolved your question: "

Never Again will I buy anything other than books from these people! And to think that I had ordered the Harry Potter 1-5 (Blue Ray) Box Set from them before reading the " Harry Potter Bargain Thread !!! " and swiftly canceling my order.

It looks as if you really have to be ishly Persistent to screw a sensible response from Amazon.com!

Re: Amazons new BOGOF Blu-ray offer

I contacted Amazon today and this is the standard reply that I got.

Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.com.

We appreciate your concern regarding the customs charges on your
recent purchase. As you know, customs policies vary widely from
country to country. Additionally, when ordering from Amazon.com,
you are considered the importer of record and must comply with all
laws and regulations of the country in which you are receiving the
goods. Many countries require these taxes be paid as a matter of
law, and we work with authorities to ensure compliance with
applicable
laws.

As noted in our Help pages
(http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/?
nodeId=468632), any customs or import duties are levied once the
package reaches the destination country. Additional charges for
customs clearance must be paid by the recipient; we have no control
over these charges and cannot predict what they might be. Customs
policies vary widely from country to country. You may want to
contact your local customs office for further information.

Generally, customs forms for international packages will list the
value of your order's contents by product type. For instance,
orders containing CDs, books, and videos will generally be listed in
a way similar to the following example:

Books value: $29.95
CDs value: $9.95
Video value: $39.95

If you used any promotional discounts on an order, please be aware
that while the promotion reduces the actual amount that you pay
Amazon.com, it does not change the value of the item itself. We are
required to declare the actual value of the items in your shipment.

Your privacy is important to us, and we know that you care about how
information about your order is used and shared. We would like our
international customers and customers shipping products outside the
U.S. to be aware that cross-border shipments are subject to opening
and inspection by customs authorities.

Also, we may provide certain order, shipment, and product
information, such as titles, to our international carriers, and such
information may be communicated by the carriers to customs
authorities in order to facilitate customs clearance and comply with
local laws.

If the order is a gift, the cost of the items is still stated on the
customs form. Customs authorities require us to state the value of
gift items directly on the package.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to address your concerns. We
look forward to continuing to build a strong relationship with our
many valued customers in other countries.

Re: Amazons new BOGOF Blu-ray offer

If you get hit by customs (and your goods actually cost you less than £18) you are well within your rights to claim the money back from HM Customs and the Post Office. Done it loads of times and all it takes is a letter to each.

Therefore if you order 2 films per order and get hit by customs you can claim the money back.
