HD-DVD Planet Earth U.K. Release

just received my HD copy today as a free replacement from 2 entertain.

5 discs instead of the 4 disc U.S. version. Disc 5 contains 2 docs, 50mins each on Desert Lions & Snow Leopards both narrated by David Attenborough.

Easily the better release than the U.S. one. All the other 4 discs remain the same.

noticed this in Asda today for £35 bit of bargain - if only I had an HD DVD player

Anyone seen a good price for the blu ray version?

Cheers

The HD DVD and the Blu Ray versions are both £33.95 delivered from Virgin-I think you get an extra 10% off if you have a Virgin credit card too.

Re: HD-DVD Planet Earth U.K. Release

Amazon are selling the Blu-ray for £33.98 while the HD-DVD is £37.49.

I wonder why there's a difference.

I've traded my US Blu-Ray for £33 and ordered the UK 5-Disc BD from Amazon.....£0.98 for an extra disc!

Is that right? Seems a bit odd.

Max resolution for my TV is 1080i anyway so even if true that won't make much difference to me.

Are you sure? From dvdcompare;

However, "The Discovery Channel"-set has some extras and for the purists - the alternate narration by Sigourney Weaver. Do note, that this "US version" is shortened and presented in 1080i (BBC-version is in 1080p).

More importantly.....does the UK release have the "Diary" bits, that were omitted from the US version?

Re: HD-DVD Planet Earth U.K. Release

My PE disc arrived this morning and I can confirm that the packaging indicates 1080i.

Doesn't bother me as I only have an E1 so output is 1080i anyway and the TV de-interlaces.

Episodes on each disc:

Disc 1: From Pole to Pole, Mountains, Fresh Water.
Disc 2: Caves, Deserts, Ice Worlds
Disc 3: Great Plains, Jungles, Shallow Seas
Disc 4: Seasonal Forests, Oceans Deep
Disc 5: Desert Lions, Snow Leopards (2 episodes from the BBC Natural World series - looks like upconverted SD to me).

Also, it appears that the 'Diary extras' that were expected are not on this set (well, I can't find them if they are!).

Dont get confused - they are talking about the two separate releases in the US - the UK version as narrated by DA and the US version narrated by Sig Weaver.

The US version of the UK series is indeed in 1080p. I'm surprised that the UK releases are presumably 1080i 50 given that the players are not supposed to be able to display this.

The U.S. original version is narrated by DA and its 1080p BUT only 4 discs, its the U.K. version 5 discs that is 1080i also narrated b DA, the 2nd one to be released in the U.S. has Sig Weaver, this is a release by Nat Geo.

Both equally superb your choice which you want to buy, im lucky to have copies of both DA releases thanks to a freebee from 2 entertain of the UK. release

Re: HD-DVD Planet Earth U.K. Release

Please can others confirm if the UK PE discs are 50fps or 60fps?

I've ordered it from Amazon.co.uk and if it's 50fps (won't work on American players) I'll have to cancel it today!

Thanks.

Re: HD-DVD Planet Earth U.K. Release

So is it only the Australian version that's getting the diary parts plus the addition "The Future" episodes?

http://www.sanity.com.au/product/pro...sp?sku=2101013

http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/produc...oductid=748336

I've just recieved the UK one today but as it's still sealed I think I'll return it for the australian one.

Re: HD-DVD Planet Earth U.K. Release

I can confirm that the UK blu ray works on a US PS3

Pressing info on the tv shows it in 1080P but on the box it says 1080i

Is the PS3 converting to P or is it a mistake in printing

It could easily be a mistake on the box. Then again the PS3 might be upscaling to 1080P if that is set as your maximum output.

Re: HD-DVD Planet Earth U.K. Release

Just got my Planet Earth UK Blu-Ray boxset last night. Can confirm the box disappointingly states 1080i and when playing back on my PS3 my normal output of 1080p did indeed switch over to 1080i

Anyone know if the UK HD-DVD release is definitely 1080i too?

EDITED* I can confirm with Daveiggy further down the page, the startup logo is 1080i, then yes it does switch back to lovely 1080p :-)

Re: HD-DVD Planet Earth U.K. Release

Is there any reason at all as to why they would put it in at 1080i instead of 1080p?

Legal issues... sky... etc?

Just kind of baffles me as to why they would do that, surely they would know there will be an uproar?

Would there be noticable difference as I would like the best copy available for this as I have been looking forward to it for a while now!

As long as your TV set has a good deinterlacer which most do these days you will be hard pressed to notice the difference.

Re: HD-DVD Planet Earth U.K. Release

Shouldn't all this 1080i/1080p business simply be down to how the program was originally shot?

If the program was shot at 1080i50/60 (ie. 50 or 60 half resolution interlaced fields per second) then surely the best way to put it onto disc is in 1080i?

Likewise, if it was shot at 1080p25/30 (25 or 30 progressive frames per second), then the best way would be 1080p on the disc.

Or indeed, it may even have been shot at 1080p24, in which case a 60Hz version would use 3:2 pulldown and a 50Hz version would use 4% speedup.

If it was shot in a progressive format, then the fact that it's 1080i on the disc isn't such a big issue, as long as your player or display's deinterlacer can correctly detect 2:2 pulldown and correctly weave each field together to recreate each orignal progressive frame.

So, does anyone have concrete information of what format this program was actually shot in?

Re: HD-DVD Planet Earth U.K. Release

Thanks Daveiggy.
If the actual program is 1080p then thats good news. If not then mine is going to be returned and i will be getting the US version.

Also i cant believe they havent put the diaries on the UK version. It was stated everywhere that it would be on the UK version...even the BBC online shops says:

'Includes the 'Making of' shorts that accompany each episode, and three extra episodes of Planet Earth: The Future.'

So why is it not there? This was the only reason i waited for the UK version. I am so disappointed.

Re: HD-DVD Planet Earth U.K. Release

But is it 1080p24 like the US version? I was disappointed when I bought the US Planet Earth on Blu-ray and found out that I had to put up with 3:2 pulldown judder. It is quite noticeable as there are many slow pans. I'd much rather have 1080i50 or 60, especially if it was originally filmed in this format.

Re: HD-DVD Planet Earth U.K. Release

Bought this the other day fpr £40 and its an amazing set!

Some of the scenes look spectactular in high definiton specially the under water ones and the caves. Some scenes in my eyes look alittle poor though and alot of the scenes to me look more like standard def than hidef but the brilliant looking scenes make up for it
