Hi guys just wondering what this film is like on HD-DVD nearly finished reading the book so i'm well interested in watching the film and was wondering if its worth my while picking up the hd version rather than the plain old vanilla dvd version.

It isn't the best HD release but it's still much better than the DVD version.

I have never read the book, but my understanding is that the film can be a let down if the watched after reading the book. I may be wrong, maybe some members have read then watched and can say if its the case or not.

I love the film myself and as Jeff says it is the best quality version to own, and can be had rather cheap.

I agree. It doesn't compare to Transformers (hell, or even Adventures of Robin Hood), BUT its is a significant improvement over the SD version. Some of the matt shots look grainy and soft as a result of the sfx process, but the level of detail on show throughout is a marked step up from SD.

And I love this movie! Having read the first 5 books, I thought that this had the right 'feel' of them, far more so than the woeful TV miniseries from a few years back. Watch that and then watch the film....the film is superior in every way!!!

I wish they would release the full Lynch version.189-minute long?

The R1 dvd also contains the 177-minute edit of the Alan Smithee television version.

To be honest, when I saw the film after reading the books, I was a little disappointed. I was a good vision, but to me it felt a bit rushed and just wasn't the same vision as the books. But hey, it's not everyday you see Sting NOT bursting into song...

I much prefered the US mini-series and its follow-up - they felt much more on the money for me - and they should be fairly cheap if you want to pick them up.

I think it's probably each to their own, so I wouldn't rule either out - though the mini-series aren't (as far as I am aware) slated for HD releases, more's the pity.

If you liked the film, you really should get the book. Takes a while to get into, but once you do . Fantastic writer, Herbert. I found myself ploughing through all the Dune series, only the latest to read now.

TBH the film doesn't do the book justice. You can understand why, the scale of the story is just immense. You'd need more than 3 films to do this. I'd put it on a par with Tolkein and then some I did enjoy the film though. Oh, and the series they made was pretty naff.
