First Blu-Ray To Buy To Impress?

I shall be getting my new Blu-Ray player tomorrow and I need to buy a disc which is going to convince the wife that I haven't wasted more money on my home cinema. I swore to her I wasn't going to enter the hi-def narket for at least another year but I couldn't help myself. I need reference quality if possible. Films I was thinking of buying tomorrow were THE PRESTIGE or THE FOUNTAIN which I love. Any ideas on a film that will knock her socks off visually. Cheers!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest is great. It's a fun movie with some stunning sea shots, looks beautiful.

Kiera Knightley aint bad either.

Casino Royal is fantastic too.

My wife first noticed the quality of HD when she saw the fine quality of the weave in the clothes of those in Starship Troopers. My jaw was hitting the floor at just about every scene.

Re: First Blu-Ray To Buy To Impress?

If you mean exculsives(meaning only released on Blu-Ray and not Hd-DVD),then:
Pirates of the Caribbean-Dead Man's Chest.
Apocalypto
Casino Royale
Kingdom of Heaven
Hellboy
The Pursuit of Happyness
Ghost Rider
and soon to be Cars and Ratatouille I'm sure

There are many good qualilty Av releases on Neutral territoty such as the ones from Waner(like Happy Feat)Weinstein and Paramount(I mean...not anymore, but there are still a bunch of them available)

Re: First Blu-Ray To Buy To Impress?

I love The Fountain as well but it's not really a film to showcase Blu's ability.Althouhg, intentionally it gets more and more vibrant as the film progresses, but still,if you're looking for demo material there are more suited releases ou there.

Identity is very good indeed.

Blood Diamond on HD DVD looked great, and I believe the BD is identical.

Casino Royale looks great.

Re: First Blu-Ray To Buy To Impress?

Cheers everyone. BD Player turned up this morning. After consulting the missus we have decided to get Casino Royale for tonight. Can't wait. Also, I had a nice surprise when it arrived today. I get the Spider-Man trilogy on BD free when it comes out. Sweet! Thanks again everyone.

It's what it's listed at. Not sure if it's a sale or not but it's definately not a misprice. I called and they confirmed it for me and i have one copy saved. The SD version is £13

What is the disc? My Asda's got about 8 titles at most and none of them are £7.

Cheers

Re: First Blu-Ray To Buy To Impress?

It's definately the Blu-Ray version. People in the Bargain thread have got photo evidence of it saying £7.

Also people who have seenit still listed as £16 have taken it to the till to find it goes through as £7.

My local store were certain the Blu-Ray version was £7 as the normal version was £13

I knew you'd say that.

The well weird thing is I've just watched it. No joke. I'm testing out a PS3 as a BD player which brings me to the £299 model you mentioned. I haven't heard of this. Is it the standard PS3 without freebies or some kind of scaled down machine?

All the best

May have a 40GB HDD and may be missing some USB ports. It may be that Sony are going after the 360 especially now that Halo 3 is out.

Re: First Blu-Ray To Buy To Impress?

It's the same as the current PS3 but has 2 less USB ports, 20GB less HDD and no memory card slots. Hradly anything essentail if you mainly want a Blu-Ray player.

What's Deja Vu like on the PS3?

I thought I was doing well with around 65 BR's (admittdly with around 40 HD-DVD's also) but damn 160.....great collection - are they all region free or do quite a few only work in specific players?

I wouldnt wish anyone to sit thru the atrocious film Ghost Rider (I desperately wanted those 2 hours back) and Identity wasnt that much better.

I really liked WindTalkers with Nic Cage - yes its a war film, which Im definitely NOT a fan of in general - but I actually think this film is pretty decent on BR

If you like cartoons either The Wild or Open Season are pretty spectacular also

I watched this a while back on on a borrowed Pioneer LX70. It had a bit of judder on that machine but there are some scenes in which Scott plays around with the image which makes it look like judder. On the borrowed PS3, set to 24 fps, it looked a lot smoother. General PQ was not the best I've seen from BD but I think it's probably an accurate rendition of how it looked in the cinema. It's the first film I've watched all the way through on the machine. I've got today off to take a closer look at it.

Any idea when the new PS3 is out?

Best wishes

Re: First Blu-Ray To Buy To Impress?

Open Season is of my 4 BR's - so a while to go before I hit the 160 mark.

Great PQ as expected, originally bouight it for the toddler but he wasn't interested...

Looking forward to Day After Tomorrow, what I've seen of the trailers so far it looks stunning, hoping Roland Emmerich's other sci-fi spectacular looks just as good. (...and Stargate - that should be promising)

Re: First Blu-Ray To Buy To Impress?

I'm not a big fan of 'The Day After Tomorrow' (it's my least favourite Emmerich film) so won't be buying it regardless of the merits of its transfer. However, I'll probably get 'Independence Day' if it lives up to expectations in the A/V department. I've only got the original non-DTS release and, despite its overall ridiculousness, it's a great film with none of the preachy undertones of 'Tomorrow'.

As far as the original poster's question is concerned, I would 100% recommend 'Apocalypto'. The PQ is absolutely sensational as is the Dolby Digital sound and I haven't even heard the PCM soundtrack which I would expect to take it to another level. Not only that but it's a truly decent film so you won't feel like you've bought it just for the transfer.

Hi pal i have about 50-60 hd dvds also, so over 200 hd movies, i dont really pay much attention to region as all mine that are region A, apart from the ones unavailable in us, but only a small amount are region B. Im buying about 20 a month at the minute, luckily my gf loves movies too.

Got silver surfer and surfs up yesterday so my have a new reference disc by tonight.

Re: First Blu-Ray To Buy To Impress?

Gutted. My ASDA just called to say they are 'out of stock' of Deja Vu on BR dispite being told yesterday that they had reserved a copy for me

Can anyone get me a copy from their local store?

Hard to bear. Maybe they made a mistake and withdrew it. My local Asda hasn't got it at all.

All the best
