Came across a post yesterday, with some chap claiming to have uploaded all six Starwars movies in HD.

Im a bit confused, I know they have not yet been released on Blu-ray or HD-DVD, so can this be true?

I suspect theyre just SD and he's confused or showing off!

...Also, for any SW fans - Family Guy, Season 6, episode 1... Its basically Family Guy version of Episode IV... hilarious.

I think that these are an amalgam of HD sources as broadcast on Sky+ and other similar HD channels throughout Europe.

One of the guys at the work says he has them all also.

Ok, I've checked what the guy has said in the post...

I still dont quite understand this though. If the films aren't available in HD, even showing them on a HD channel, SkyHD Movies, surely they won't be the same quality as the eventual official HD releases?

Seeing as many movies aren't officially available in HD yet, I've often thought Sky and other HD channel providers are simply upscaling SD material to HD resolutions, so it's not true HD.

Maybe I'm wrong but I could be right. Hard to prove unless someone works at Sky or is in the business and can explain how they get hold of this material in true HD. If the studios are supplying broadcasters with HD material it's only a small step to provide it to consumers too, so why delay taking that step?

What they do is use a uncompressed source (.ts files) for the HD releases usually from HDTV streams. Then re-encode them using vc1/x264/wmvhd.

I don't think that SkyHD upscales movies. Or any other HD movies channel.

Sorry but if you can't actually tell the difference between an HD master and an SD one I'd stear clear of high definition in general.

All 6 Star Wars movies have been broadcast in HD 1080i at regular intervals. Sky has purchased the rights. They are all sitting in my HD box, and are stunning HD quality, esp the last 3. Not bothered about when released on disk, cos no need (would need a bigger TV/projector to benefit from 1080p).

They are also available in compressed and uncompressed versions of the HD broadcasts in torrents from the usual dodgy places.
