This week's figures

Week Ending 23rd of September sales BD 63: 37 HD DVD (2% swing to BD).

I currently can't bring up the details, and I'm in the middle of cooking, so it might have to wait for tomorrow.

Main thing is that the BD of 'Troy' is number 1, with the HD DVD nowhere to be seen - probably due to the fact that this is new to BD, but not HD DVD.

Oh, and strangely enough, 'We Are Marshall' has sold better on HD DVD than BD.

Re: This week's figures

1% off for me, taking my average to being 1.5% off. Next week a bit harder to predict though, I'm expecting at least a 3 or 4% swing I think, then the week after a big swing the other way, so going be hard to keep a good prediction percentage.

I hope talking about our prediction guesses doesn't fall foul of the thread.

Re: This week's figures

Very sorry for the delay.

This week 63:37
YTD 66:34
SI 61:39

Top 10

1.Troy:DC (BD) 100.00
2.300 (BD) 98.63
3.The Comdemned (BD) 78.89
4.We Are Marshall (HD DVD) 61.83
5.We Are Marshall (BD) 52.13
6.300 HD DVD 49.10
7.PE (BD) 44.33
8.PE (HD DVD) 34.84
9.Smallville (HD DVD) 32.66
10.Casino Royale (BD) 30.76

Aggregate By Title

1.300 100.00
2.Troy:DC 88.64
3.We Are Marshall 77.15
4.Planet Earth 53.60
5.The Condemned 53.40
6.Smallville 33.67
7.Deliverance 21.32
8.Casino Royale 20.82
9.Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut 20.12
10.The Departed 18.70

Blu-ray Disc Top 5

1.Troy:DC 100.00
2.300 98.63
3.The Condemned 78.89
4.We Are Marshall 52.13
5.Planet Earth 44.33

HD DVD Top 5

1.We Are Marshall 100.00
2.300 79.41
3.Planet Earth 56.35
4.Smallville 52.81
5.Batman Begins 39.13

E&OE

So, no-one wants 'Troy:DC' on HD DVD - maybe they thing the TC was more than long enough. BTW, this print of 'Troy:DC' has had some stick from BD fans, but it still sold well.

'We Are Marshall' sells better on HD DVD than BD, and by c.10%.

'Heroes' has 2 good weeks, then disappears completely.

And it looks like HD DVD's 'non'combo' release paid off for at least one title - 'The Departed'.

Next week's figures' releases:

Dual Format:

Gods and Generals
Gothika
The Wild Bunch
Wyatt Earp

Blu-ray Disc Only:

Black Book
Memoirs of a Geisha
Tekkonkinkreet
Underworld

HD DVD Only:

Evening
Freedom: 2
The Getaway (1994)
Knocked Up
Next
Patch Adams

What a funny lot!

'Black Book' is great, but will it appeal in high def? 'Underworld' should, but it's a catalogue title.

'Knocked Up' is 'only' a comedy, but it was very big indeed, and is a new title. 'Next' was poorly received, but the sort of thing you might expect to do well in high def.

Surely all four should sell better than 'The Condemned' and 'We Are Marshall'.

A very funny lot!

In that case it's good to see it back in the 'bubbling under' area.

Re: This week's figures

I think it's clear that 'Troy:DC' almost certainly skewed this week's figures.

HD DVDs usually sell anywhere between 50% of the equivalent BD (see this week's sales of '300'), or slightly more (as we see this week with 'We Are Marshall', or as we've seen in the past with 'Planet Earth').

Had 'Troy' not previously been released on HD DVD it would therefore have sold between 50% of the BD, and a few more than the BD, putting it anywhere between 5th and 1st place. As it stands, it must have sold less than 'Batman Begins', meaning less than 40% of the HD DVD of 'We Are Marshall', which means less than 24% of the 'Troy:DC' BD.

As there was only a tiny (2%) swing to BD overall, we can almost certainly put this down to 'Troy' being a re-release (of sorts) on HD DVD, but not BD.

Re: This week's figures

Unusual to revive last week'a thread, but I have some new information.

One of last week's Top 10 The Condemned has had its sales figures leaked.

Using some basic maths, and applying the ratios to those figures, it's been possible to extrapolate some pretty accurate sales figures for the week.

I thought you might find it useful to have some real numbers rather than just ratios, so here you go:

Code:
Top sellers by SKU:

Troy: Director's Cut BD 3822
300 BD 3770
The Condemned 3015
We are Marshall HD 2363
We are Marshall BD 1992
300 HD 1876
PE BD 1694
PE HD 1332
Smallville: The Complete Sixth Season HD	1248
Casino Royale 1176
Troy: Director's Cut HD 1182
Batman Begins 925
Smallville: The Complete Sixth Season BD	652

Top sellers by Title:

300 5646
Troy: Director's Cut 5003
We Are Marshall 4356
Planet Earth: The Complete Series 3026
The Condemned 3015
Smallville: The Complete Sixth Season 1900
Deliverance 1204
Casino Royale 1176
Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut 1135
The Departed 1056
Batman Begins 925

Re: This week's figures

Interesting figures.

Can't understand why the HD-DVD version of Smallville has sold twice as many as Blu-ray. Surely they are identical versions?

These figures, just to confirm, are they US only?

Just out of interest, for the same period, what did 300 sell on standard DVD?

Re: This week's figures

Yes, the figures are US only.

Don't know about SD, I'm afraid.

Some people at AVS are saying the reason Smallville and We Are Marshall didn't sell as well on BD was that there were stock issues.

But that may well just be fanboy talk.

One more thing - numbers bloke & big BD fan Grubert has figured out that these weekly Nielsen figures amount to c.80% of sales, so you can add an extra 25% on top of those figures to see how many were sold.

Wasn't the blu-ray version of Smallville delayed a little?

Where it says for example 3822 sold for Troy on BD, are these figures in thousands or was it actually only 3822 copies?

If it were in thousands it would be better than the DVD sales for the week, 3822 x 1000 is 3.8 million. Unfortunatly it's the number in copies.

25% of 80% = 20%.

20% + 80% = 100%.

If Troy: DC sold 3822 at Nielsen returning outlets, we need to quarter that (956) and at it to the original figure.

This suggests Troy: DC sold 4778 copies in total.

Not wanting to get too format-war-y, but this is why Paramount could ditch BD. The may be ditching the '2' in a 2:1 ratio, but currently the whole lot means nothing. It's not about what's selling now, it's a question of how you see the future.
